KUMP is delighted to release the first EP by HLM38, the naughty half of duo Ricco and member of the Notte Brigante crew from Lyon. The three original tracks, a mix of ethnic looting and industrial racket in slow motion, feel like steel wrapped in Turkish delight. Front de cadeaux’s take on “Illicite Cong” is reminiscent of an erotic rave flavoured with Oriental spices. Last but not least, Kris Baha slices up “Exit” like a tablier de sapeur (local Lyonnais dish) served on a julienne of  syncopated samples and noisy beats.

On November 30th Denovali records presents ‘Calibrate’ – the new album by respected underground figure, composer and producer Ricardo Donoso. As has now come to be expected from the questing musician, once again he has endeavoured to do things differently, pushing beyond any comfort-zone parameters. 

‘Calibrate’ proffers the highest of fidelity, with blockbuster sci fi levels of production value and bombast. Donoso channels sonic spirits across fluro pointillism, futuristic industrial tribalism and more serene moments of synthetic reflection.

Having never courted accessibility, Donoso remains as unbending as ever in his approach and unwavering in commitment to his craft. Calibrate takes Donoso’s polymetric abuse and sound design to all new extremes. Conflicting rhythms and swathes of electronic debris move in tandem, to create pieces that expand and contract in on themselves.

A journey through Calibrate is an exercise in instability and failure; its aggressiveness serves as a warning against the urge to seek safety on common ground, and its entire approach seems to display a hostility towards the increasingly homogenized nature of new electronic music. 

The first in a two-part series, ‘Calibrate’ seeks to explore not only the literal connotations of instrument accuracy, gauging and tuning, as represented by the constant flux of machinery and computer noise, but also explores calibration as an adjustment; to take external factors into account, or to allow comparison with other data. With ‘Calibrate’ Donoso continues to question what music is, and what it expects of him. 
Ricardo Donoso is a composer, percussionist and electronic musician from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil who currently resides in Boston. After having studied composition at Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory, he has participated in a slew of projects over the years, from holding down the drum chair in avant-metal visionaries Ehnahre, to scoring for recent documentary features such as Greg Barker’s ‘Homegrown: The Counter Terror Dilemma’ (HBO pictures 2016) and the Grand Prize short film winner in Brazilian cinema ‘Casimiro Effect’. Donoso has since collaborated with film makers and video artists on commissions worldwide, creating immersive environments and performances. 
As a solo recording artist, Donoso has released music on esteemed labels such as Denovali, Digitalis, Further Records and Hospital Productions, and continues to tour throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America. He is most concerned with building and manipulating an immersive sound world that blurs the line between light and dark, hope and despair, past and future. Under a chain of progressive rhythms, cinematic textures and elegant melodicism, Donoso’s work pushes through with piercing strength, manipulating a sonic wave through space with nothing but mind-blowing intensity.

The artist from Utrecht, called Solotust, makes his debut on the Soil records label with a 6 song mini Lp. All of them are loaded with dark melodies that move between minimal synth, dark krautrock and synth pop. TL Premiere : Sololust - Too Much Days On A Row [Soil Records]

On Miniatures, his first release under his own name, Swiss artist, composer, and producer @samuelreinhard looks back to his early work as a sound artist and his exchanges with visual artists, as well as to the indeterminate techniques of mid-century experimental composers, to produce a sonic path forward that’s as refined as it is evocative. Consolidating long-running traits from his multi-faceted practice—reduction, repetition, a focus on texture—Reinhard finds a place from which to open up his practice by synthesizing what’s essential.

While Miniatures is built from recordings of short piano gestures decaying towards silence, amid the four movements that comprise the suite, something else grows. Reinhard has arranged piano samples within a system devised to allow him to remove himself a few degrees from the process of composition; notes cycle, collide, and wash away within boundaries the artist has set, but in their wake new processual textures develop. A hiss blankets the harmonic material, clicks that once marked sharp cuts between repetitions become a percussive undercurrent. From these asynchronous continuums, subtle harmonics emerge. Devoid of breaks or narration, sounds interact with each other like the cells of an organism.

Working with digital tools, Reinhard conjures the interior of an animate environment that’s ever-changing. Whatever blossoms in the mind while taking in these compositions, we’re surrendered to the feeling of being still while moving forward, an invitation to notice the small stuff that swells when we settle in with duration. Focused in palette but rangy in its evolving grain, Miniatures is a generative composition brimming with intricate, lively detail below its cool surface. 

Since completing an MA in Contemporary Arts Practice at Bern University of the Arts in 2015, Reinhard’s output has taken many shapes, ranging from collaborations with visual artists, experimental solo releases under various monikers, production work for a wide variety of artists, as well as installation work that has been shown in Europe, Asia, and the United States. 

This album follows releases from @martina-lussi , @magda-drozd , Robert Turman, Anna Homler, and Steve Moshier on Präsens Editionen.

Samuel Reinhard - 2nd Movement

Bernardino Femminielli is proud to present his first 2020 LP L’Exil. The album is composed of lost Plaisirs Américains sessions recorded in Montréal, Quebec. Lyrics were written and recorded in Paris and Berlin in 2019 and mixed again in Montréal in early 2020 by producer
Dominic Vanchesteing (Plaisirs Américains, Double Invitation). L’Exil is the “pre-conclusion” (Prequel / Part 0) to two other LP’s— Johnny 4ever (Part I) and Nobody’s Boy: Johnny (Part II)— which will be released later this year.

L’Exil (2020)

L’Exil, the album, the performance, the satire, took shape after the notorious arrest of Bernardino Femminielli by American border authorities during a US tour in 2018. Instantly, the American Pleasures, the American dream became obsolete, irrelevant, of the past. The showman and his anguished wife decide to abandon their failing restaurant, their debts and their meagre North American livelihood to wander the old continent in search of a fresh start.

L’Exil is an paradoxical anthem for the unsuccessful. An elegiac and lyrical autofiction in the form of a concept album. A satire of show business, a tribute to society’s outcasts and heroes— a story which tells of the financial, artistic and spiritual failure of the exiled American showman (Femminielli). We learn early that the showman has a desire to symbolize the contradictions of life. We learn that the showman is affected by a multitude of dissociativeidentity disorders. A visit of an angel named “Johnny” seems to make him believe in the existence of his double, who sadly does not come seeking camaraderie, but with malicious intentions. He's the employee, the boyfriend, the slave. The showman loves his wife because she looks like the showman. Johnny and the wife have become products of his tormented world. Spiritual and psychological cannibalism is rife, and all will be complicit in the showman’s atrocities.

The literary and cinematographic borrowings are here violently diverted from their proper meaning to tell the story in their own way. Pasolini’s Italy, Fassbinder’s Germany, The Years of Lead, Macronist France, police terrorism, paranoia, obsession with the double, substance addiction, money and marriage are all subjects touched upon with humor and despair. As the showman ominously cautions: You don’t argue with a sly dog, you break his teeth and his jaw.

Bernardino Femminielli, frustrated by his status as a misunderstood artist, has constructed a semi-fictional caricature of himself. A guy adrift, an anti-hero, the politeness of despair, a loser crooner who's lost his way. The album has many faces of the same distress: those of the victims of a system that marginalizes them. Repeated themes and catalysts present in the album:

One’s failure to achieve professional success can lead to unexpected volatility.

Exile is oppressive thus one must also transform into an oppressor.
Violence is a direct result of frenzied desperation.
Cannibal mechanics are often precipitated by financial devastation.
Self destruction becomes a means of self preservation.
Consumption always without moderation.
Money is earned, and then like life, it’s burned.
