In 2019, Fly Pan Am released C'est ça, their first record in 15 years, but their 2020 tour plans were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tellier-Craig discusses his fascination with music as a studio art, the unexpected creative opportunities presented by quarantine, and the hyperreality of our present in which our fragile sense of reality seems poised to collapse at any moment.

SP* Episode 18: INTO THE UNCANNY VALLEY - with Roger Tellier-Craig [podcast]

This mix is admittedly a bit outside of the kind of music we usually feature in our mixes, but we have always prided ourselves on our range. The influence of Brazilian music is far reaching, and can be heard in musicians as different as the Sea and Cake, Jon Hassell, Madlib, and Chick Corea's Return To Forever. As a flutist in my youth, I had encountered some of the standard Bossa Nova and Samba tunes through the jazz world, most notably via Stan Getz's classic collaboration with João Gilberto. But in 2007 Matthew Hayes Jacobs passed me two CDRs he'd burned of an excellent playlist he'd compiled of Brazilian music, introducing me to Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Quarteto Em Cy, Djavan, and many others. I found Veloso's "Lost in Paradise" to be so disorienting—with its psychedelic lead guitar,  surreal lyrics in broken English, and smooth string accents punctured by discordant brass arrangements—that I quickly found myself down the rabbit hole of Tropicalia, Oswald de Andrade's "Cannibalist Manifesto," the fiction of Clarice Lispector, and the history of Brazil's military dictatorship. I owe a lot to those two CDRs. So when my old friend Matthew recently released a couple songs under the moniker Sage of New England, I thought I would invite him to produce a new mix to share his love of Brazilian music with our readers. 

I'd always heard rumors from mutual friends of Matthew's skills as a musician and songwriter, but he had never released any recordings. Luckily that's finally changed, and in 2021 he's begun to release singles on Bandcamp and other platforms. Sage of New England is Matthew's new project with producer Justin Tracy, taking its name from a one of Matthew's songs about a woman who becomes disillusioned by her search for inner peace, but who learns from a farmer that wisdom can be found anywhere. There is an undercurrent of Buddhist imagery and narrative in Matthew's work, which reminds me that I am also indebted to him for introducing me to the writings of Shunryu Suzuki. I think you'll find some of that spirit in his songs "Fire Tales" and "Encounter with a Guide," which their rhythmic propulsion, beautiful chord voicings, and plaintive singing style. The influence of his beloved Brazilian music should be apparent, but he also brings this mindful attention to the careful pacing of this mix. Enjoy.

Happy (very belated) birthday to us! Back in February of 2022 we celebrated the tenth anniversary of our blog. To celebrate, in this episode, we pull the curtain back a bit to talk with ten of the writers who have contributed to A CLOSER LISTEN since we began over a decade ago. Utilizing my idiosyncratic editing skills, I’ve conjured a virtual roundtable discussing the past, present, and future of ACL. We discuss the founding of the site, abandoning scoring, and all our sub-sites, mixes, and other projects that define us. Our discussion of video game music gives way to a reflection on film scores, and the relationship between sound and the visual more broadly, including artwork, packaging, and physical media. We recount what has made ACL distinct over the years, our openness to new sounds, the joys of ongoing discovery, our formative influences, and our signature blend of critical positivity.

The music for this episode was selected collectively, drawn from tracks that came up throughout our conversations. Scattered throughout the episode are also many 10 second clips I solicited from friends of the site back in 2014. I used them to make some “community sound collages” that I never properly shared, so it seemed fitting to include them here.

Having first captured our attention with Monolithic Nuance (2018) for Longform Editions, Megan Mitchell’s Cruel Diagonals has continued to impress with each new work. With Fractured Whole, she set herself the task of producing an album using nothing but her voice as raw material. While she deserves recognition as a gifted vocalist, she deserves at least as much praise for her production work, alchemically transmuting her voice into a wide range of instruments and textures.  In this episode, she discusses the production challenges posed by Fractured Whole, her background in musical theatre, her work with the feminist archive ⁠Many Many Women⁠, and much more.

Ukrainian Field Notes - 21 February 2024 - with Polje

This episode of SOUND PROPOSITIONS features scholars Kerry O’Brien and Will Robin, editors of the recent anthology On Minimalism: Documenting a Musical Movement. Described as a historical source reader, the book compiles over 100 primary sources retelling the story of minimalist music from the 1950s to the present. Sources include liner notes, interviews, journalism, manifestos, and other material organized chronologically and thematically, with introductory essays from the editors. Not a simple revisionist history seeking to expand the canon, let alone an attempt to dethrone the “Big Four” composers, On Minimalism nonetheless radically reconsiders the scope of minimalist music. In some ways the book is a restorative history, following the offshoots of musical practices that had once been described as “minimalist,” beginning with non-western music and modal jazz in the 1950s up to drone rock and techno of the present. We discuss the influence of Ravi Shankar, why the Coltranes were minimalists, the Julius Eastman revival, and much more.

Poemproducer became her “internet name,” and has come to stand in for her idiosyncratic approach to vocal-based electronic music. Last November, AGF quietly released Poemproducer, almost exactly 20 years after Westernization Completed. Channeling her internet name into her first proper solo studio album since SOLIDCITY (2017), Poemproducer is built around mutating bass, freeplayed rhythms, and subtle field recordings. We discuss the evolution of her musical practice, her interest in pedagogy, feminism, collective politics and much more.

Shida Shahabi is an Iranian-Swedish pianist and composer, with a background in sound art.  Early Autumn is timed to coincide with the release of Homes, Shahabi's debut album. Mainly featuring an old Swedish upright piano as its sole instrument, Homes delves deep into explorations of intimate piano tones, assured in its imperfections and sparse arrangements. This mix brings together old favorites with new releases in honor of her debut solo release.

The inaugural episode of our new podcast, Sound Propositions, features interviews (with Resina and Lea Bertucci) and field-recordings recorded during the 2018 UNSOUND festival in Krakow, Poland. (You can read my review of the festival here.) The theme of this year's festival was "Presence," and so that became the point of departure for my interviews, particularly the ways in which absences can also be felt as a "presence."

Emilie Levienaise-Farrouch ~ Organes Electriques [Mixtape Premiere]

Deep Minimalism (i) is a gentle excursion perfect for our shared moment of collective unease. Newsha Khalaj is a Vancouver-based violist and the author of this mix. She put this tracklist together with a purpose. As she explains, "I needed these soothing, shifting, deep-moving sounds—life was a little heavy for a while, for personal reasons—and these songs, this mix, is that."  Khalaj sent me the tracks and I mixed them live, which was a really meditative process.

In July, Khalaj played as part of the Slow New Way Ensemble for Nadia Sirota’s Living Music series, one of the more interesting quarantine concerts I've seen. The Ensemble performed the world premiere of a new work by Richard Reed Parry [Bell Orchestre, Arcade Fire], made especially notable as it was performed live via Zoom by musicians in Berlin, Montreal, New York and Los Angeles. The rest of the episode is equally worth your time, of course, including a performance by Clarice Jensen.

Newsha Khalaj presents Deep Minimalism (i) [mix]

This mix accompanies the LISTENING THROUGH MIMAROĞLU episode,  featuring director Serdar Kökçeoğlu discussing his work and the Mimaroglu project in particular. I originally had in mind a second episode with interviews with other musicians I met while in Istanbul, but for a variety of reasons not everyone was comfortable speaking for audio, or we were otherwise unable to find an opportunity to record.  Of course there are also linguistic barriers. Save polished corporate aesthetics for the professionals, this podcast is more interested in something else. So instead I present İSTANBUL EKSPRES, a bonus mix of music from Istanbul artists old and new.

We spoke about some of her favorite Anatolian psychedelic bands, among other things. Since the 1990s, international music publications like the Wire have become hip to Turkish rock from the 60s and 70s. Artists from that era were often incorporating folk instruments from around the region into a rock ensemble context.  But that's just one facet of Turkish musical heritage.

Sample-based producers like Group Ses, working in styles influenced by hip hop, trap, beat tapes, etc, make up a vibrant scene of crate diggers, mining the rich history of Turkish (and Ottoman) recordings. 

İSTANBUL EKSPRES is my attempt to share some of this music. I don't claim any expertise, or pretense of exhaustive knowledge, just wanted to share  the music and voices of the amazing artists I met in Istanbul.

SP* Episode 14: İSTANBUL EKSPRES [mix]

Kassel Jaeger, once little more than a mysterious German moniker producing captivating music for our favorite boutique labels, has since been revealed to be François J. Bonnet, composer, philosopher, and now director Ina-GRM, France’s legendary center for electroacoustic research. No longer shrouded in mystery, his prolific output has lost none of its power. In the last year he’s released some of the best records of his career, including collaborations with Jim O’Rourke and Stephen O’Malley. Having grown accustomed to hearing Bonnet’s voice as host of France Musique’s L'Expérimentale, it was a trip to have the opportunity to sit down with him while he was in Montreal for 2019’s AKOUSMA festival. In this episode, Bonnet speaks with us about the development of his music, various acousmatic diffusion techniques, the privilege of composing for the acousmonium, and balancing the legacy of the GRM with the music to come.

I lived in South Minneapolis for 4 years, most of that time in an apartment building on Chicago Avenue and 39th St, just a block from the intersection where police murdered George Floyd. 

Music for Insurrection is a sound collage, blending field-recordings I made in South Minneapolis, livestream audio from the Uprising in May 2020, samples, and improvised instrumentation (flute, practice soprano sax, sampler, fx).  
Livestream samples from Unicorn Riot, friends' Instagram stories, and Youtube, including  a sample of Mel Reeves speaking to protesters. Excerpt from Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower (1993) read by me.

"A conversation with my brother Jordan Christoff created this mix. First we were talking about Vaporwave and also stretching sound, then as often we were talking about Bulgaria, the Balkans and music, then Chalga came up. I also remembered some Yugoslavian pop tracks that were super beautiful and tragic which featured in the excellent film The Load, by Ognjen Glavonić, a very important piece of cinema about the complexities around the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999, this film is a must watch for anyone living in a member state of the NATO alliance. I watched that film with my father also, that was a very moving experience. For this mix I reworked some tracks from the Balkans, below are the names of the original songs, in no particular order, you won't be able to hear them directly in the mix, this is drone reimagination.
