COUP - Silent Disco

The Council on University Programming (COUP) organizes several large-scale events and long-standing traditions for the entire University of Chicago community throughout the year. A recognized student organization since the 1980s, COUP is known for its diverse set of programming, which includes its perennial Blues N’ Ribs festival held in the fall and the Summer Breeze carnival, which features a broad array of food, entertainment acts, and inflatable recreation. In the winter, COUP organizes Kuviasungnerk/Kangeiko, an annual winter tradition entering its 33rd year, which derives from an Inuit word for the “pursuit of happiness” and the Japanese word for a martial arts ritual. For a week, participants wake up at 6:00 am in the morning to engage in morning sun salutations (yoga stretches) and a medley of exercise workshops – and receive a T-shirt at the end of the week to commemorate their commitment. A core element of COUP’s philosophy is to provide fun, exciting events completely free of charge to its attendees. Board applications to join COUP are held annually in the spring, and the board consists of typically 20 undergraduate students.
