This is one audio sample from my exhibition called Sabaru Demb, an introduction to examples of soundscapes of the all-pervasive Senegalese musical phenomenon called sabar, a common nominator to drumming, dance, and dance events. The rhytms presented and played in this exhibition are played by Saint-Louisian sabar griot Abdoukhadre Diop, also known by the name “Vieux.” As the Wolof title - Sabar of Yesterday - suggests, Abdoukhadre Diop has a repertoire of rhythms and musical compositions (bakks) that consists of traditional rhythms. Sabar, being part of the very rich tapestry of Senegalese immaterial culture, evolves constantly, and the older rhythms remain the domain of a certain generation of sabar masters.

Next to my house is a half-finished building that has been taken over by one of the many local "Koranic schools" in which very young boys "learn" to read the Koran. This kind of exercise is carried out daily in early mornings and late evenings for about two hours each time. I recorded this in my bedroom by an open window and forgot to put the wind muff on so please excuse me the low quality of the recording.
