Morning by Rengaskari Reef - 20/4/2021 - Makholma Finland

While working on a documentary project in Addis Ababa, I was lucky enough to visit several natural sites in Ethiopia. This is a recording from Lake Langano, where many birds and other animals live. 

I was recording on the shore near the fishing village, which you can hear softly in the background. At that time, children were bathing and having fun.

Archival Ambiance Pt. I - Michigan (recordings made during the first two weeks of August in 2020).

Watershed Preserve Pond Deck Ambiance:
This soundscape was captured at the Addison Township Watershed Preserve, located in a remote part of rural southeast Michigan. This 229 acre nature preserve features four kettle lakes, wetlands, and hiking trails that snake through the forest and meadows. The Zoom H6 recorder was set on a wooden dock that ran out into a secluded pond. This allowed it to capture those quiet yet clear & crisp laps of water and rising bubbles in the closer edges of the deep soundfield. Filling out the rest of the frame are a variety of birds including morning doves and crows to name a few, crickets, flies/bees, and more to be discovered with a good pair of headphones. No editing besides fade in/out, and doubling the track for increased volume. Maintained and presented as an HD 96k WAV file.

During a severe wind storm, I revisited the yellow popular from this winter storm recording: https://soundcloud.com/acousticnature/tree-creaks-inside-an-oak

This time, I stuck a pair of EM272 microphones inside the tree cavity instead of putting my SASS in front of the opening. I mainly did this to protect the mics from the heavy rains that came during the night. 

I was really amazed at how well the tree insulated the mics from the outer world's sounds. Even the torrential downpour we received sounded like a gentle drizzle. 

When I popped the SD card into my computer the next morning, I was surprised that the popular made less noise than the previous recording, despite the increased wind speeds. 

I think this may have been due to 2 things: the warmer weather and deeper cracking along the the main trunk. I believe both these factors gave the tree more "wiggle-room" and caused less direct rubbing.

This recording is a compilation of 27 interesting clips throughout the night ranging in length from 3-111 seconds.

Tree Creaks Compilation | 50mph Gusts

The main goal of my trip to Lorraine in the east of France was to record Common Midwife Toads. The location was an old disused quarry just outside Lérouville and knowing the toads begin calling after dusk, I arrived early to have time to scope out the location. I was immediately greeted by a group of very vocal Pool Frogs, their calls echoing around the quarry. I captured this recording much later that night, just after midnight.

Another venue for Warmth to showcase ambient and dub music's finest, Archives welcomes Heidelberg’s Luis Miehlich. The German’s debut LP, Silences, is the first production under his birth name rather than “woolookologie,” which he released with once before on Mango Alley. Alongside breathtaking collaborations with SineRider and Erder, Starlight’s pleasant atmosphere and delicate plucks serve as the perfect score to drift away to.

This was a beautiful recording to capture. My field recorder was located on top of a 300' ravine overlooking the Chattooga River. The combination of wind sounds and that of the river make for a very relaxing soundscape. As the sun sets, you can hear the wind, tree limbs knocking together and some birds in the background.

Because there was almost zero noise pollution at this location, I am able to share this 11 minute recording of pure nature sounds with you!
 
Recorded with a DIY binaural SASS recording rig with Primo EM-172 microphone capsules. I use this setup paired with an Olympus LS-10 recorder for a low budget, low noise option.
