Salt N’ Peppa ​is a faster cadence written to work within a solid blend of sonic sounds. It was originally written for Dallas Mavericks Drumline 2012, and performed regularly by the group. The idea was to play something fast, where the Blue Knights Drum Corps had Square Push, The Cavaliers had Fast Things, and The Mavs Drumline had a couple different Hot Wing variations, I decided to try something a bit different and write something new so we could switch the vibe up. This piece has also been performed by the Genesis Drum Corps along with the Colleyville Heritage Drumline.
Beginning - This piece has no tap off. It starts with a solo snare drummer. And adds in snare as the phrase continues on the count 4 shot, in measure two. As the phrase continues to add players in it will naturally crescendo to the peak of nine.
Measure #35 starts another add in as a tap roll. Depending on the size of the line this phrase can be phrased however you would like, *remember this was written originally for a group consisting of 4 snare, 2 quads, and 3 basses covering 5 parts*, so it’s flexible. However, the phrasing written seems to feel the best from a 4 bar phrase comfort feeling. It’s followed by a passdown roll that carries from snares to quads, down to the basses and then the metric deccell ram.

That One ​is a piece originally written for the Dallas Mavericks Drumline in 2012, and performed by the group regularly. This piece was inspired by a couple of different drumline composers, and licks that I’ve grown to appreciate over the years. One thing I learned was that every arranger and composer has that one thing that they do that makes them special, and stand out from everybody else. As I’ve gotten older I’ve grown to appreciate that every MUSICIAN has that one thing that they do differently from everybody to make them stand out. And this piece is a testament to the licks that I’ve had the luxury of learning and love to pass down however I can, for instance:
Measure #3 - The quad groove, was inspired by Jordan Brooks, Blue Knights Drum Corps I&E solo “His Work”
Measure #13 - Snare lick was inspired by Ron Schermerhorn III, who currently serves as the Director of Percussion at South Texas College
Measure #19 - The “Aus” lick. From Jeff Ausdemore, former caption head of the Blue Knights Drum Corps and co-owner and educator with Styve Mind.
Measure #20 - Invert Flams from BD’s 95 cadence Richard, which I learned from Roger Carter in the summer of 2006
Measure #27 - Was inspired by the cadence Spider. There’s a lengthy roll passage in and I like most drummers enjoy the sound of a great quality roll across a drum line.
Measure #30 - Was inspired by the fun stickings and moeller technique of Murray Gussak’s Santa Clara Vanguard days.

Kryptonite ​is a piece that I wrote years after my time as a drumline bass drum technician. I previously worked for the Revolution Drum Corps from 2009 through 2011. The ensemble saw a lot of growth especially within the percussion program, and fortunately and unfortunately at the same time a lot of their lengthier warm ups and groovier warm ups went by the wayside as the group started focussing on other aspects. And I always heard about an accent tap exercise by Carlos Botello, yes Mr. Lefthand Pathbook himself wrote, and to this day I never got a chance to hear it as there are no recordings or music to be had. So all I have to reference are the stories from previous members and staff. This really got me thinking why don’t I just write my own, and see what comes from it. Well this is that “it”.

With Yourself is a piece originally written for the Dallas Mavericks Drumline in 2012, and performed by the group regularly. This piece I wrote during a very stand on a soap box style mindset, from the very beginning of the piece it’s meant to announce “We’re here!” Only to be immediately followed by, look we can be musical.  This piece if overplayed (dynamically) will sound like a ram, but if played to propper dynamics will showcase way more groove and musicality through micro phrasing.  And big shoutout and inspiration notes to Nick Werth for inspiring me to make a quad groove.  I figured this was something he would do, tasty and colorful and just the right things around the right drums.
