Martin Meissonnier a sorti en 2019 un incroyable album intitulé « Kinshasa 1978 », pour l'historique label bruxellois Crammed, où il proposait des remix, ou plutôt des reconstructions de musiques urbaines zaïroises. Cela faisait un moment que ce fringant touche-à-tout de 64 ans n'avait pas vu son nom apparaître sur un disque, lui qui a commencé à jouer au tout début des seventies. C'est que Meissonnier a souvent préféré rester modeste et s’illustrer en tant qu’homme de l’ombre. Mais il n’est pas non plus un requin des studios, même s’il y a passé un temps fou : il est avant tout un artiste des sons, des rencontres et des mélanges, au flair incomparable et à la curiosité insatiable. 

En cabine, en coulisses ou sur scène, il a accompagné des figures aussi immenses que Don Cherry, Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé, Amina ou Cheb Khaled. Ambassadeur en Europe des musiques africaines, du raï à l’afrobeat, il est aussi l’un des premiers Français à s’être intéressé de près aux machines, aux musiques électroniques et plus largement aux nouvelles technologies. Puis il s'est plongé dans ce qu'on appelle la musique pour l'image, composant aussi bien la bande-son de la cérémonie d'ouverture des JO d'Albertville que le générique des Guignols de l'info. 

Il a aussi été, en parallèle de sa carrière musicale, journaliste et documentariste pour des médias défricheurs : Libération dans les années 70, Radio Nova dans les années 80, et ARTE avec l’émission culte « Megamix » dans les années 90 et 2000. Aujourd’hui, il est surtout DJ sous le nom de Dox Martin, et artiste sous son propre nom, même s’il continue d’offrir ses services à de jeunes talents venus d’horizons variés. 

Des squats post-68 aux studios londoniens, en passant par le Paris afro, l’Eurovision ou les débuts d’Internet, le parcours de Martin Meissonnier raconte tout un pan de notre pop culture, dans ce qu’elle a de plus ouvert et aventureux, et de moins franco-français.

rRoxymore’s music exists in the murky territory between house and techno. It is music you can dance to, but that never seems to be its primary intention. Shifting synth sequences bring rhythm, exotic percussion bring worldly feelings and her rugged and deconstructed drum machines bring inventive grooves. The Berlin based French artist herself calls it “mercy-less house” and has put most of it out on Don’t Be Afraid, including her Face to Phase album later last year, which was an album full of intriguing and exploratory sound scapes.
 
In the past, rRoxymore has played percussion in a rock band, played hip hop and rare groove and soundtracked art installations, so she brings that widescreen understanding of groove to this week’s mix. It’s a leftfield selection of humid and tropical rhythms that dangle like vines in a jungle before morphing into broken and syncopated beats with a heavy low end. It’s compelling, stripped back rhythm music that seems to takes cues from UK funky, EBM, disco, techno and plenty more besides.

Paper is a latest piece in my series for “prepared” violin. This one uses paper weaved across the strings, the resulting sound is that of a woodwind instrument (I hope). It is then improvised.

Orlando Gibbons Fantasia IV - I first played these Fantasias in 2011 for F-IRE Klang Codex concert series run by Lucy Railton and Fred Thomas. Around the same time I began performing at Oto in Lucy’s Kammer Klang and in some way I will always associate the Gibbons Fantasias for Treble Viols with Lucy and the early days at Cafe Oto. 

Slow Change is a process piece, a journey of the bow going across the string from the bridge to the end of the fingerboard, the sound is slowly changing, other strings get involved as the bow gets higher on the fingerboard. "

Two years after the stunning Africa Oscura, Four Flies Records is back with another gem from Giuliano Sorgini’s secret archives, this time one which unearths some of his darkest, eeriest music – that is, pieces he composed in the mid-70s for some of the most infamous, low-budget horror movies ever made in Italy.
This collection brings together a selection of original recordings from those movies, which were directed by “Italian Kings of the B’s” Angelo Pannacciò, Salvatore Bugnatelli, Luigi Batzella, and Guido Zurli, who are among the kings of Italian B-movies, and with whom the Roman composer worked intensively throughout the 70s.
Due to the very low-budget nature of the films, Sorgini, recorded the soundtracks entirely on his own, in his Cat & Fox Studio in Rome. He played drums and percussions and added overlapping layers of analogue synths to create a superbly sinister soundscape, thus turning a constraint into an opportunity.
The result is a journey into the mysterious atmospheres of the Italian occult-sounding music of the time, something very close to the dark electronic masterpieces that made Sorgini famous, such as Zoo Folle or The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue.
Occulto features ten previously unreleased tracks characterized by enigmatic moods, obscure beats and esoteric themes. All tracks are taken from original master tapes that remained buried in the composer’s archives for decades.
The LP comes in a deluxe jacket and inner sleeve designed by Luca Barcellona.

Four Flies are proud and honoured to release the first vinyl reissue of Bruno Nicolai’s outstanding original score for GEMINUS, a 1969 Italian TV mini-series directed by Luciano Emmer and starring Walter Chiari, Alida Chelli, and Ira von Fürstenberg. 
Originally released under Italian label Gemelli, Nicolai’s soundtrack has been remastered from the original master tapes and comes in a glossy, tip-on style jacket featuring the restored original cover artwork, as well as extended liner notes by film critics Francesco Cesari and Roberto Curti. 

Bruno Nicolai composed and directed an eclectic score that brings together different music genres and influences, from 60s beat, psych, and prog rock to baroque and experimental music. He did not hesitate to mix classical forms and structures with new instruments and remarkable, eccentric arrangements. In ‘Giano’ (Janus), the interplay between a distorted electric guitar and a hypnotic harpsichord creates a strange, somewhat troubling ambience. The delicate, celestial voice of Edda Dell'Orso leaves its unique emotional imprint on the most lyrical piece in the soundtrack, ‘Tema Barocco’ (Baroque Theme).
The main theme ‘Il cielo cade’ (The Sky Is Falling) features a luxurious arrangement and stunning orchestration enhanced by enchanting vocal harmonies sung by ‘I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni’. 
In other pieces, such as ‘Larve’ (Larvas), ‘Il sognatore’ (The Dreamer), ‘Eclisse di luna’ (Moon Eclipse), ‘Visioni’ (Visions), ‘Catacombe’ (Catacombs), and ‘Notti romane’ (Roman Nights), expressive and experimental solo passages played by instruments such as the vibraphone, sitar, harmonica, or percussions, contribute to the sombre, mysterious atmosphere of the score as a whole.

British comedian Adam Buxton talks with interesting people. The rambly conversations are sometimes funny, sometimes more serious with funny bits. Adam records the intros and outros for most episodes while walking with his dog friend Rosie in the East Anglian countryside where he lives with his wife and three children. 

Adam has appeared in films such as ‘Hot Fuzz’, ‘Stardust’ and ‘Son Of Rambow’ as well as a variety of TV shows in the UK. Since 2007 he has hosted ‘BUG’, a live show that combines music videos and comedy that became a TV series on Sky Atlantic in 2012. From time to time he also does live shows featuring just his own material. Along with lifelong friend Joe Cornish he also is one half of award winning TV, radio and podcast duo Adam & Joe who have worked together since 1995.
