On Wednesday October 18 2000, Rt Hon David Lange allowed all of his available audio to be used in support of the messages and production values of Prof. Greenwell's film for the new millennium, No Chance to Paint the Canvas - the world's first film about civil society on a global scale (http://www.globalcooperationliz.com/#!liner-notes-to-film-music-tracks/c1mhs)

The track David Lange, presented by Town Green Music, covers Mr Lange's political career from his opening speech of the 1984 snap election which results in victory for his Labour Party, led by the incomparable and dynamic David Lange as Prime Minister.  The track concludes with Mr Lange's Valedictory Speech to the New Zealand Parliament in 1996, making amends for some of the social costs of his government's economic reforms, which he always tried to balance with an emphasis on social policy, before resigning as Prime Minister - undefeated- in 1989. Prior to his shock resignation, Mr Lange had been invited to give a speech at Yale University and to meet with Yoko Ono, who claimed that her late husband, John Lennon, would have very much approved of Mr Lange's policies for world peace, and no nuclear weapons.

The track, The Debate, follows Mr Lange's acceptance of an invitation to debate his country's nuclear-free policy against the late Rev. Jerry Falwell at the Oxford Union. At the time, many government officials and even Margaret Thatcher advised Mr Lange against taking part in this debate. Rev. Falwell was a major backer and supporter of President Ronald Reagan, so there was a direct feed to the White House when this debate was broadcast.

BANSURI -(Music by Phil Hornblow, Jared "Woody'' Wood, Adam Greenwell) . Bansuri and Antique Belgian Flute by Jared "Woody" Wood

The bansuri (Hindi:) is a transverse alto flute of India and Pakistan, made of a single length of bamboo with six or seven open finger holes. An ancient musical instrument associated with cowherds and the pastoral tradition, it is intimately linked to the love story of Krishna and Radha, and is depicted in Buddhist paintings from around 100 AD. The North Indian bansuri, typically about 14 inches long, was traditionally used as a soprano instrument primarily for accompaniment in lighter compositions including film music. Its introduction for serious Hindustani Classical Music is credited to Pandit Pannalal Ghosh.

The bansuri played on this track was especially made for Woody by a holy man of music in Mumbai, after hearing Woody play music for the pursuit of spirituality.
As is often the case when I come up with new ideas, I slightly annoyed Phil, and confused Woody, by suggesting that an instrumental version of "New Shoes on my Soul" could be played on Bansuri. "New Shoes" has many chord changes, transposed to piano, whereby the bansuri can only be played with a few notes that are a semi-tone higher. . But anyway, as you will hear, I suggested that Woody follow his heart and play without thinking, in keeping with the spirituality of the instrument. Then I suggested that Phil follow him on keyboards, using sound effects from New Zealand natural life: traditional Maori( indigenous) instruments, bird song and waterfalls/river flow.

It worked out well......... :)

Mud's been thrown for so long it sticks, took on the Wall of Apathy , brick by brick, now I'm gonna read a Tintin book,  (I don't mind the dog in the space suit) See *1, I'll go by the sea, with guitar, notebook , Dilmah tea, and chocolate eclairs, all those calories , see if I care I just wanna be happy as the day is long ...so now, I sing my lazy song, I sing my lazy song.
City life, so fickle here, I want to go to a forest, standing for years...Leave them all to their petty infighting, and get to the river where the fish are biting ...What's the catch? Does ignorance come when we batten down the hatch? A rabbit hole is warm and dim, the light of day is a pretty cold wind . Perspective's where I'm coming from . But now, I'll sing my lazy song, I sing my lazy song.
 
THEN WOODY PLAYS THE SAX............................................
Now tell me is there any room in, a place for someone looking to be human? Hip,cool, nasty, bad, adjectives for the latest fad , well...(it's) all a stage, a mask, a costume for every age, and... what do we see, when it all goes as it ought to be ? In a life full of contradictions, I sing , my lazy song..I sing my lazy song .
Some good advice I heard doing the rounds about two kinds of people in every crowd: The true artist brings out the best ; the con artist rips off the rest. Kitchen hand, day in, day out on the pots and the pans, you know that you're an artist too . When you're giving it all to that thing that you do , well I thank the guy who put me on - to those words- in my lazy song. I sing my lazy song .
 
* In case you are wondering - the Tintin book is Explorers on the Moon (1959) , with  amazingly accurate accounts  of the moon and space travel , ten years before the actual moon landing . I've since believed that education and humour go hand in hand ......
 
1) Tintin has been called a "Catholic Hero" by the Vatican, in response to the latest movie produced by Stephen Spielberg and New Zealand's own Sir Peter Jackson. Tintin was the creation of a Catholic cartoonist, Herge, who worked for a Catholic newspaper. The editor, a priest, asked Herge to promote Catholic teaching  with adventure stories.
