Love from Helsinki to all TINPE crew! This is Ocean People, sometimes known as DJ Anonymous. My city is great, but also pretty far out, so I’ve been doing mixes to connect with folks since I was a kid – 1995 to be exact.

I bring you a selection of 70’s Philadelphia productions that I absolutely ADORE. 

There Is No Planet Earth readers know that Philly as a sound played a pivotal role in the evolution of dance music. I discovered it 20 years after the fact in the 90’s – and it was a REVELATION. 

I have vivid memories of hearing My Love Is Free (by Double Exposure, produced by Norman Harris) for the first time. I was like, what are these uplifting rhythms & melodies? How can a song be almost 10 minutes and still go so hard? Where can I find more? 

This set me on a path of music discovery that has come to define my life & DJ practice. Philly led to the full spectrum of 70’/80’s dance music, which in turn led to house and all of its children. 

And here I am, 25+ years later, still getting hyped over Norman Harris productions. 

Philly producers left us with larger-than-life songs that will never die (Love Is The Message, anyone?). This guest mix showcases selections that hold the same amazing power, but never got the same attention. Many are special edits – by myself & others. I hope you enjoy the vibe.

The CD comes in a silver metal case. In total 50 copies were made. The CD’s were distributed through Safe Distribution as “pay what you want” and in various (offline) record stores worldwide.

Lecture: Karen E. Till — Wounded Cities
Artists' Responses: Susan Gogan, Beth O’Halloran

Dr Karen Till, Senior Lecturer of Cultural Geography, Maynooth University, discusses memory, national identity, systemic violence and the possibilities of spatial justice in the cites of Berlin, Cape Town, Bogotá and Minneapolis. Drawing upon the work of activists and artists,such as Joseph Beuys, Till argues that to acknowledge the historic ‘wounds’ of the city enables the process of memory-work that is needed to create healthy places, citizens and states.

Followed by short presentations that address ‘Artists and Place’ by (i)Susan Gogan and (ii)Beth O’Halloran who will both discuss their work in response to the city of Berlin.

Dr. Karen E. Till is Director of the Space & Place research collaborative and author and co-author of numerous scholarly books and articles, including The New Berlin; Mapping Spectral Traces; Walls, Borders and Boundaries; and Textures of Place. Critical of current-day narratives of resilience, Till's ethnographic research of field notes, interviews, archival texts, public art and maps advances a 'place-based ethics of care' that negotiate the contradictions and tensions of social trauma, memory-work and national identity existing in today’s modern cities. As an ethnographer, curator, and creative writer, Karen often collaborates with civil society actors and artists on projects that seek to advance the work of caring for places as a means of working through difficult pasts and imagining more just futures. She is currently working on a book-length international comparative project, Wounded Cities, that examines how groups that have inherited the legacies of state-perpetrated violence offer alternative spatial imaginaries of the city through their place-based memory-work.

Beth O’Halloran is a visual artist, her work is concerned with ephemeral, in-between states and places. Lately, she has incorporated representational images of creatures which inhabit these ‘grey areas.’Her practice spans painting, photography and installation. She has exhibited widely in Ireland, the UK, USA and Japan. Highlights include Preponderance of the Small, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Green Horizons, Olin Museum of Art, Maine, USA.
Susan Gogan is a visual artist whose practice is primarily through the medium of photography and more recently through moving image work.  At the core of her practice is the examination of social space and our relationship to it, with specific reference to the writings of Henri Lefebvre and Edward Soja, and the concept of Thirdspace, involving the expansion of the spatial imagination to create new possibilities for transformative thinking and the symbolic use of space in the everyday as a means of carving out new, alternative identities within our urban and suburban spatial structures.  Susan has exhibited widely around Ireland and in Australia and the USA.  She is currently undertaking the Art & Research Collaboration (ARC) Masters programme at IADT, Dun Laoghaire. 

Art | Memory | Place is a year-long programme of talks and events taking place over the course of 2015 - 16 in the context of the ‘decade of centenaries.’ Focusing on artists whose work addresses themes relating to memory and place, the purpose of this programme is to broaden and deepen the current discussion about the subject of remembrance and commemoration and to take account of such work.

In june I played on Taimur Agha's show The Bandwagon at Halcyon Records in Brooklyn, NY, 2012-06-28. Some mistakes in there due to general drunkenness but ignore that!
