I think we'll look back in the not-too-distant future and see social media as the cigarette of the 21st century.  There's certainly upsides to social media (connections, networking, keeping in touch), and there may not be any to cigarettes (aside from it's cool to blow smoke out of your mouth like a dragon), but I still believe, at least the way it seems like it's used, social media is mental poison.

Not everyone's smiles are real on social media.  Not all families are as happy as they appear.  And if we believe they are, we might compare our own happiness and well-being to that which boils down to a fictional representation.  We might as well compare ourselves to characters in a TV show.

Anyway, this song is about how social media can mislead, but can also make you feel invisible.  The irony of being able to be looked up by anyone on the planet and simultaneously feeling lonely and in need of validation is not lost on me.

I'm not invisible, I'm right here, standing tall.

A Little Better

Sometimes, something happens in life, and it hurts.  And then, perhaps, the mind makes the association "do this, and it will hurt."

Touching a hot stove is an example.

Loving someone and then experiencing a heartbreak is another.

Sometimes, if something hurts enough, avoidance seems like a reasonable tactic.  And sometimes, if one avoids something for long enough, they forget the association of pain, and it just becomes part of their behavior; part of their life.  They no longer see the association - which was made unconsciously as a 'safety' measure - and then remove any possibility of that experience from their life.

The wound never heals.  It's not even recognized as a wound after some time passes.  Instead, all chance of pain to that wound is avoided.  Even if the pain was caused by ignorance, or innocence.  This can be especially true when we're young and don't know any better.

This song is for me; it's about me.  It's something I had to learn about myself, about love, about pain, and I didn't realize it until literally yesterday morning.  I wrote in my journal, looking at my history, and all of a sudden, things made sense.  "Oh.  You've been acting this way for years trying to avoid pain, when the pain you suffered when you were young was just due to circumstance, ignorance, innocence, and chance.  No other reason."  Sacrificing one of the most beautiful things in life simply to avoid pain.  Or even the idea of pain.

And so I had to write a song.  This song.  To lower the shields, I had to recognize that they were up in the first place.
