Hard Times and DJ Spen go back decades. The Baltimore house veteran has long been a fixture at the label’s parties, on the remixes, and now under his Muthafunkaz alias he cements the bond with a set that’s as much a time capsule as it is a renewal. The Muthafunking Hard Times EP revisits a clutch of Spen’s early-to-mid-2000s jams that, till now, have never been committed to wax. “Velvet Static” is a seamless blend of deep house warmth, tech house precision, and classic house energy, shaped into a modern club-driven sound. The album moves between silky, atmospheric grooves and sharper rhythmic pulses, creating a rich contrast that feels both intimate and electrifying.

Smooth, hypnotic basslines anchor each track, while textured synth layers add depth and motion—true to the “velvet” in its name. The “static” comes through in subtle percussive details, crisp hi-hats, and glitch-inspired elements that give the music a restless, kinetic edge.

Vocal cuts drift in and out like echoes, adding soul, attitude, and emotional tension without overwhelming the production. Some tracks feature airy, melodic toplines, while others use chopped or filtered vocal fragments to enhance the rhythmic flow.
