Terrestrial Groove

This is the first in a series of songs written in the style of iconic artists from jazz history.  It is based on the 1926 recordings of Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers and is a tribute to him, the first great jazz composer/arranger, and the self proclaimed "Inventor" of jazz.

The Inventor

This song is written in the style of the 1939 Count Basie Kansas City Seven recordings, which featured tenor saxophonist Lester Young and Basie's great rhythm section: Freddie Green on guitar, Walter Page on bass, Jo Jones on drums and Basie on piano.  The popularity of swing in Kansas City, which drew throngs of musicians from around the country during the Great Depression, was due in part to reigning political boss Tom Pendergast's allowance of a loose-moraled environment, in which jazz thrived.  The title is an homage to swing-era Kansas City: "Tom's Town."

Tom's Town

A contrafact on "Blues for Alice," this song is a tribute to Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and the other great pioneers of the bebop movement.

The Innovators

Written in the style of and using the same instrumentation as the Miles Davis Nonet, this piece is a tribute to The Birth of the Cool and the cool jazz movement it helped inspire.

Rebirth

This song is a tribute to the Jazz Messengers, a group often defined by the drummer and bandleader Art Blakey's hard-driving shuffle.

The Art of Shuffle

In the late 1950s, alto saxophonist Ornette Coleman was accused of using his theory of 'harmolodics' to mislead critics who were overly analytical of his work, a ploy known as a red herring.  This piece is a tribute to his piano-less quartet and the free jazz or avant-garde movement it helped inspire.

Red Herring

An original tune arranged for the instrumentation of the Weather Report, one of the great jazz-rock fusion bands of the 1970s and 80s.

Strut-March

Excerpts from my first (but not last?) attempt at a piece for orchestra.  A good first read by the University of Northern Colorado USO!  The piece is a musical model of the Chrysler Building, NYC.
