This is one of a load of ideas I've tried to make demos of using Garageband - usually I just record a riff and take it off to be an Advances In Mathematics tune. This time I built up  a few simple riffs and realised it wouldn't work for Advances so I may as well do something with it for myself. The vocal sample was added right at the end as I thought it needed something different - it's a copyright-free recording of Walt Whitman's 'Of One's-Self I Sing' from Leaves Of Grass - I've just read this for the first time after being given a copy as a leaving present from my old work, and it seemed to fit really well. 

The Form Complete

I had a bassline I'd been playing around with for a few days. Doubted it would work for anything Advances...-related so decided to make a quick recording; it being a day off I found myself with pretty much the whole tune you hear here about 90 minutes later. I went for a shower, then ate a pie, and came back to it refreshed. Spent about as long again playing with the organ sound at the end (which still isn't great) and finding the effected drums at the very end. Named it arbitrarily after the first book I saw on the shelf in front of me; it's quite a boring biography of Jack Kerouac. I hope you find the song more entertaining.

Thanks so I am going back

I thought I'd use my afternoon off work (with another stupid cold) to make something.  This started off as an attempt to do something quite straightforward, dancey and 'up', seeing as that's not the sort of thing I usually can come up with. It started off pretty well; I toyed with the idea of building it up entirely out of basslines...then after the 3rd bass track was in I ended up drowning it all in guitars. Then I took a few away again, and that's what's here. Still sounds a bit electro-goth though (I blame a recent conversation in which the 'Spawn' soundtrack was raised; clearly it planted some terrible ideas in my head), which is not what I intended.  

MIght come back to this to bolt on some extra melody somewhere, although spending more than a day on a track seems wrong somehow. On the plus side, I like how the first guitar sounds. On the down side, I'm not sure the little stops work. Ah well. Let me know if you like it, and be polite if you don't.

Walk Don’t Run

New track from Advances In Mathematics, the Manchester-based 4 piece instrumental band who kick off In The City 2010. It's post-rock without the self-indulgence, shoegaze with melodies. Built around chiming guitar lines it's typical of the bands' sound but is perhaps the most coherent track they've recorded yet.

Advances In Mathematics - What We Have We Hold

Recording fuzzy nuggets of genre-fluid misery once or twice a decade. 

I have no intention of playing these things live or encouraging anyone else to do so. If you like them though, let me know. Affirmation makes us all feel better. I’m definitely better in a band and maybe one day again I will be.
