San Francisco/Paris-based label Spring Theory is back with its fourth release. Called Sweet Bitter Love, it's a four track EP of manic sample-driven house from Keita Sano, a Japanese producer who's been on a roll lately with releases for like-minded imprints Discos Capablanca, Mister Saturday Night, and Strictly Groove Recordings.

Sweet Bitter Love kicks off with the tripped-out flair of "Once I Found a Diamond." It's an uplifiting bongo-led cut with dubby melodics that sound like the kind of thing Sleeping Bag Records would have put out in the early '80s. Jacques Renault provides a leaner peak-time version — complete with hard-hitting snares and growling bass — via his "Once I Found a Diamond (Jacques Renault Trouble Funk Remix)."

Things take a turn for the delightfully weird on the EP's namesake "Sweet Bitter Love." Starting like a straightforward house cut, it explodes into a psychedelic collage of spaghetti western guitars, tribal calls, displaced jazz fills, and other forms of cleverly sampled soundtrack exotica. The release wraps up with yet another curveball on "Bouzouk." Here Sano lays out a subwoofer-knocking NY garage house rhythm that takes a left turn with frenzied bouzouki playing charting arpeggios through a haze of echoing foreign voices.

Taken as a whole, Sweet Bitter Love is that rare idiosyncratic bomb of an EP that will keep your dancers moving and your trainspotters guessing — In other words, it's Spring Theory through and through.

Welcome to the tenth episode of the RawCast brought to you by co-founder of the legendary Local Talk Records, Tooli.

Tobias Lidström aka Tooli has been promoting, arranging and playing at parties all over Sweden since 2007. 

As a promoter Tobias been involved in several clubs, booked djs and promoted venues on a regular basis. The main project for a very long time was 24:hrs which started as a site to promote new music and then grew to become a record label and one of Stockholms premier clubs.
24:hrs was nominated best club in Stockholm and held down three recidencies since they started. Some of the Dj’s invited to play last years include Dirty Soundsystem, Tensnake, Tony Lionni, Hercules & Love Affair, House Of House, Gerd Janson (Running Back), San Soda, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Levon Vincent, Prince Language and many more.

In 2011 Mad Mats & Tooli joined forces and set up Local Talk Records and over the course of those three years they've poured heart and soul into putting out release after release of high quality underground house music. Always wanting to broaden their horizons, a year ago the guys covertly started working on the Telefonplan label focusing on rougher house and techno.

So far the Local Talk has gained fans in Gilles Peterson, DJ Harvey, Joey Negro, Danny Krivit, Jacques Renault, Hose Meat Disco, Laurent Garnier, Axel Boman, Deetron, Chez Damier, The Revenge, Jimpster and many more...!

Besides doing 24:hrs Tooli is also behind the music at Tranan in Stockholm and books bands and DJs. Tranan is one of the classic bars where A Tribe Called Quest, St.Etienne, Diplo played records back in the day and more recently DJs and producers like Brennan Green, Prins Thomas, Max Essa, Rune Lindbaek, Bill Brewster, Mark Seven to mention but a few!

At the moment Tooli is focusing on DJing, producing original material and his new label Omena, which he set up in 2014.

Stay The Course: Is the debut album on Superbest Records for newly announced artist Willdabeast. Will Glazier and co-producer Daniel de Lisle present a new approach to Electro-Soul and instrumental Hip-Hop by bringing boisterous horn sections, stacked synthesizers and heavy bass to their music.  Aware of the sample based history of the genre, Willdabeast endeavored to bring collaborative artists into the studio to record (and sometimes replace) live instruments and vocals, crafting a fun, personal journey through the album.  Fans of funk, hip-hop and electronic music alike will all find what they’re looking for on Stay The Course.

Similarly, the album art, by graphic designer Mike Lunde is an attempt to encapsulate these personal experiences and questions surrounding the theme of duality,  He combines natural photographs of mountain ranges and juxtaposed images from around the Pacific Northwest, where the group is based out of.  Lunde sums it up perfectly, “What I did was I took an image from some regional mountains and kind of twisted them together, as if to make them appear stronger, working together.  I went with the idea that your album has a couple different things pulling it in different directions, you take these elements and twist them all together, to show how they can work harmoniously.  It also signifies bringing together big things in your life, and doing your best to make them all work.  For some people, its twisting work and a balanced lifestyle, for you it’s probably family and music, being gone a lot from your family isn’t easy and you need a strong, connective support system to enable the constant supply and creation of art required to advance in this industry all while finding time to continue to perform and simultaneously taking care of your obligations at home.

Aware of the sample based history of the genre, Willdabeast endeavored to bring collaborative artists into the studio to record, and sometimes replace samples with live instruments and vocals, crafting a fun, personal journey through the album. We were fortunate to have many friends join us from our hometown and from our travels including Matt van den Heuvel (who plays guitar on more than half of the album), Vokab Kompany (San-Diego based hip hop band) and locals Brittany Littke, Sinclair Hucke, Gary Washginton on vocals, Todd Templeton (drums), Matt Taggart (bass), and more.  There is even a cameo from Glazier’s acclaimed father, Dr. Loss Glazier, a published author, tenured professor in new media and owner/operator of the largest poetry database in the world, on the song “Way Back”.

Lasting Guilt will always be a song that will stay in my life as the song that changed how I make my music. As i've done for a while, i've used samples a lot from other songs, and for a long time this has been making me feel empty, and disconnected with my music. Asking questions like, is this song really mine? Well with this song, little to no samples were used, the instrumentals are all recorded and done by me and my good friend Jarred. This is the kind of music I want to make, I feel more original, and captivated when I do this process. So please, enjoy, and let me know what you think!
