Nas - "Made You Look (The Adam Peter Shinn Remix)"

This is a true story. In early December 2019, Karen and I were on the West Coast. I brought my brand new field recorder on the trip to get some sounds for a future music production project. We drove from the Bay Area down to Henry Cowell Redwood State Park and explored the sights and sounds there. I was able to capture some really cool sounds of birds singing to each other in the trees. It was a blissful experience. Shortly after that moment, I had a sharp panic attack that something was seriously wrong back home. It felt as if there was a scary presence in the nature surrounding us. It was screaming for us to drop what we were doing and go home ASAP. At this point, I knew that my Mom wasn't feeling well, but figured she was going through a bad bug or something common like she had in the past. For something to feel so ominous, you would expect it to be dark and gloomy in that forest. The irony is that so much peaceful light filled the forest floors. It was puzzling. Shortly after our time in the forest, we learned that my Mom was really sick with pneumonia and taken to the hospital in an ambulance. We stayed in Santa Cruz that night in a motel that overlooked the beach. The sunset on the beach was magnificent and it was inviting us to stay. But of course, it was at that motel on the beach that Karen and I knew we had to fly back home the next morning. We didn't realize that the coming months would shake our world the way it has. We're very much still reeling from the effects and in the middle of a transitional season. That trip got cut short but it was a significant trip! I captured a couple of peaceful sounds that surrounded the shroud of mystery that was my Mom's health: the redwood birds singing and the Santa Cruz beach. Both of those moments offered peace and panic to me. I used/embedded those exact sounds in the production of my new song "Midnight Mystique".    

"Midnight Mystique" is beautiful but curious. Dark pianos and reverbs. Arpeggiated synths that climb then descend. Violins that give a sense of questionable hope. All things I've felt through this crazy journey. Things I'm still feeling now. There's no doubt that amidst one of the most challenging times in my life, I'm in the middle of a creative renaissance. I turn to the art in times of stress. It is an escape, and the creation of this piece, perhaps more than ever, is no different...
