I know Nothing

Working on some processed kalimba sounds for a short texture in a new Glasfrosch tune, I accidentally spent the whole day jamming out possibilities and decided to collage them together into a piece.

The main sound object is a short kalimba melody I performed for the new Glasfrosch tune Acceptance. It's being spliced and mutated in the Make Noise Morphagene, recorded direct in stereo, as well as back out through some other modules before returning back to the mix as an additional mono layer.

I assembled this piece in Ableton, but did as little post sound processing as possible. I added small amounts of delay and reverb for taste (althought the recording originally had a fair bit on it already). Mostly just compression and a panning.

This makes sense to happen now, after all the Pierre Schaeffer stuff I've been reading this year. It's also really fun to make music off the grid and just play with a variety of objects all with their own logic and forget what instruments they are, forget about melody and harmoy and rhythm and just sculpt with sound.

Morphagene Kalimba Experiment

The Blade Runner Blues lead / harmonica patch is one of the most expressive patches Vangelis ever did on the CS-80. Among other things it features sensitive and fine-tuned velocity and aftertouch response, with quite different settings for each of the two synth lines. Since it is not directly derived from the CS-80's preset buttons, as many of his other go-to patches were, and especially because it has so many expressive nuances, it is not a straightforward patch to recreate. 

 After many hours of fine-tuning every possible parameter on the CS-80V3 and much A/B comparison, this is the closest I have gotten. The pad background was created with the Roland VP-03 strings to emulate Vangelis' gorgeous VP330, and some Rhodes flourishes were added.

Playing around with tape loops and a skipping record, looping them both (tape through Strymon Magneto, the record in a Qu-Bit Nebulae) and letting the loops phase and interplay as simple little sound collages. The record is a Chopin Nocturne, the tape loop is from the man Who Plays Music on His Fingers.
