LYRICS BELOW. My first ever multi-track home demo for a DIY white elephant gift party.  Shocked that nothing went too wrong in the few hours it took me to record.  I'd never heard the story of the King of Siam giving his enemies white elephants as unwanted gifts, so I got a little monk-y on the intro.  I put a rock in the gift bag to throw people off and it was picked by Frank Green, who was unlucky enough to get my custom Xmas mix cd last year.  After the gift exchange was over, we went back to a quiet bedroom and gently laid his name onto the end with Andrew Kalomaris.  Then we burnt a copy and had a big, totally sober singalong, complete with lyric sheets.

Lost classic. Carvel Bass replaced my Bay Area roommate/YDG reader Sam in the band Tucker and when that band dissolved a few years later, he started Luminar with Creston Creswell (drums), Patty Liu (violin, percussion), Peter Ford (guitar/vocals) & Yuki Kasuya (bass/vocals) . Their lone six song self-titled EP is a masterpiece of alt-rock jangly beauty. I positively wore it out in the summer of 2000 and a year later flew to SF to see them around Christmas at the Make Out Room. It was absolutely worth the trip, though I could've done without my "friend" throwing up at the club, getting out of the cab and at our hotel. No one's perfect. There's not a trace of them on the internet so I had to upload this. I wish there was more to remember them by. There are used copies on Amazon. Get one.

Someone told me about a song that Carvel sang at a party that had everyone in tears.  Eventually it made it into Tucker's set.  This was recorded at Boomerang in San Francisco in 1995 at the end of a rough, raw set.  Imperfect, just like the song's tale.  Glad there's some record of it.

E is for Earthling.80, a one song present from famed Insomnia Radio podcaster Michael Catanzaro to his wife. He wrote a sweet little song called “I Love You More Than You Love The 80′s” and hired me & Mike Kamoo from Earthling Studios to turn it into a John Hughes soundtrack outtake.  I tweaked a few lyrics to flow better and put on my best Modern Gahan English voice.  Mike switched on the ARP Omni keyboard that made Joy Division & New Order sound so great and all of a sudden things got serious....seriously awesome.

Near the end of 2001, my band Rookie Card was regrouping so, for fun, I answered an ad for a coverband doing Zep, Stones & Kinks in 2001 and a young woman answered the phone and said “Hold on, DAAAAD!” I almost put down the phone but instead spent a few months rehearsing in a house that looked like a Hard Rock Cafe with a bunch of nice guys around 50 years young who made me feel like a kid in a good way. I definitely got better as a singer not having to try to play guitar and try to sing like Robert Plant which I eventually got better at (notsomuch on this recording). We played one show but I felt weird after they decided to replace the niceguy drummer/founder with someone better. Years later, Dana told me they all thought I was gay, so I must've been doing something right. I broke it to him that he'd been sporting a mullet which he apparently already knew.

Since I grew up listening to 91X, my friend and new wave expert Mike Byer inquired about the #82 song on the station's 1984 year-end countdown. I had to admit that I didn't remember it.  I used a new-fangled device called "Google" to see if I could find more information and found a discussion on the New Wave Outpost that Mike frequents. Hello http://www.LMGTFY.com .  The song appeared on a 1983 compilation of local bands called Rock To Riches along with NE1, whose song "123" appeared on that year's countdown.  The message board thread was full of dead-links so I thought that Yer Doin Great owed its readers a listen.  I figured that it couldn't be that hard to find a member of a local band and I was right. It took all of ten seconds to see that their singer Randy Simer is playing guitar in a No Doubt tribute act that my grandpa's band Geezer has been trying to play with for years.  Was he on Facebook?  Yep.  Has he been looking for an excuse to digitize the song?  Yep.  Were they probably listening to a lot of Britsh music?  Yep. Do you love Yer Doin Great?
