The melody is a thing of memory. It collects time and suspends it in apprehension of a whole. It is a sequence of points, and it is itself a point, merely a part cut from the virtual fabric of sound. The melodies here open a space of possibility, becoming only through the process of their realization. Filtered by it, they emerge folded, many-faceted - like crystal, or stone. Heard, unheard, reheard, they listen in all temporal directions. Expanding and contracting like breath, here: melody crystallizes as harmony, harmony unfolds as melody.

The Hand, The Grid, And The Red Breeze takes as its sole material the minuscule and often imperceptible sound of an e-bow at the edge of functionality on an acoustic guitar with gradually slackening strings – amplifying its feedback interference, internal dynamics, and slow transformations.

Excerpts from the music for "lupines will abound" (2020). An observational documentary film by Cody Edison (www.codyedisonmedia.com) which - in Cody's words - explores the shifting environmental impact of the fires on the iconic Southern California citrus farm in Ventura County. The camera saunters through a burn zone as one looks back and forward, and listens to a landscape of scorched abundance entrenched in memories.

STARPERMEABLE thirteen

A remote recording project with Maria Bulla (timecanvases.wixsite.com/timecanvases) and Brian Griffith (www.briangriffithmusic.com).

Separately isolated as we were due to the pandemic we decided that we would record every day for a month. Beginning in April (2020) we recorded for one minute every evening at 20:20, simply keeping in mind the fact that we were mutually engaged in this daily activity. No coordination was made beyond this simple prompt: no preconceived idea of what we would record, how it might relate to each other's recordings, nor how these would develop over the course of the month. At the end of the project, we made several versions: one which renders every day's recordings, layered together, one after the next; another which was generated with a max patch. The latter is heard here.
