Today, we’re very excited to present the WUMP debut of our good friend, Pi Wrecks!  This electro-soul producer from the Springfield, MA area caught our attention a while back with his smooth, funky vibes, and we are ecstatic to welcome him to the WUMP family.  Today’s release, “Skies of Grey”, is a single off of his forthcoming ‘Remember Back When’ EP, which will be released 9/14/16 via WUMP.

As life throws us curveballs, it’s important for us artsy folk to find a way to channel the difficult situations into creation, whether it’s writing music, painting, dancing, or whatever else we like to do.  Pi Wrecks, aka Jeffrey Edinger, is a perfect example of someone who ‘gets it’, and doesn’t let life’s obstacles get in the way of his art.  It seems to be the exact opposite, actually.  It’s inspirational to all of us how he, mere months after being in a scary medical situation, is producing some of his best music to date, fueled with a fiery passion to pour some positivity into the world.  You can feel the emotion and soul in “Skies of Grey”, and it’s really powerful stuff.

“Skies of Grey” beautifully showcases Pi Wrecks’ knack for sampling and revamping dusty vinyls, combining them with his own masterfully crafted melodic riffs and basslines.  The song takes us on a journey through the mind and heart of Pi Wrecks, some sections utilizing tasteful guitar riffs and vocal samples, while other sections take us down the darker, grittier path with some serious bass.  All throughout “Skies of Grey”, he is able to create perfect sonic balance, fusing tons of different styles and elements into one cohesive, flowing piece that tells quite the story.  One listen, and you’ll be whistling the melody all day long, as it is the perfect combination of catchy and unique.  The percussion, as always with Pi Wrecks, provides a driving backbone for the song without overpowering the melodic elements, which is something that is often not achieved successfully in electronic music.  Toward the end, Pi Wrecks shows off his grit, with some gnarly synth womps that are reminiscent of old Pretty Lights and GRiZ with some serious attitude.  With just the right amount of glitch and warm synths, “Skies of Grey” is just an overall badass, well-rounded electro-soul tune that deserves some serious love.

KAUNAN is Oliver S. Tyr (Ger.), Boris Koller (Au.) and Göran Hallmarken (Swe). Oliver S. Tyr is the frontman of the well-known German folk band FAUN. Boris Koller is a professional painter and composer who specializes in working with the old types of Nyckelharpa (the Kontrabasharpa, and Gammelharpa). He has contributed to numerous studio productions and concerts performed by various early music ensembles. Göran Hallmarken is one of the most outstanding hurdy-gurdy players on the Swedish folk and medieval music scene. 

KAUNAN have played concerts in Germany, Sweden, France and the Netherlands. Audiences have been fascinated not only by their virtuous performances, but also by the drive and archaic power that lies behind their fresh interpretations of the old songs. KAUNAN do not simply play a Polska; they celebrate it, with almost religious passion.
