Living Building Conversation #9 - High Performance Buildings

The State Government of South Australia and the Adelaide City Council have made clear their bold plans to make the City of Adelaide the world’s first Carbon Neutral city. One part of approaching this ambitious goal could be through encouraging the construction of net zero energy buildings.

A net zero energy building produces enough renewable energy to meet its own annual energy consumption requirements. Such buildings rely on exceptional energy conservation and on-site renewable generation to meet all of their heating, cooling and electricity needs, but also come with the advantages of having very little (or no) energy bills and exceptional thermal comfort.

Living Building Conversations #12 - The Built Environment in a Circular Economy

This Living Building Conversation focuses on the ways we ensure that our buildings are built to perform and ensure we live and work in efficient and comfortable places.

Buildings can be designed to be energy efficient and intended to provide comfortable places to live and work, however whether the building performs as is intended during operation can be a grey area. Gaps in actual construction, quality assurance through construction and user behaviour can all be contributors to buildings using more energy than anticipated. There is a gaining focus within the development industry to address these gaps via testing & monitoring of buildings, improving quality checks throughout construction and improve user behaviour.

Our Panel is be hosted by ASBN’s Chairman Ken Long who will lead the discussion spanning the latest research and industry trends.

The Living Building Challenge is an attempt to dramatically raise the bar from a paradigm of doing less harm to one in which we view our role as steward and co-creator of a true Living Future. The Challenge defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today and acts to rapidly diminish the gap between current limits and the end-game positive solutions we seek.

Guest Bio
Stephen Choi is a UK-qualified Project Architect and Australian-qualified Project Manager. He has led sustainable design teams at small and large practices before founding a not-for-profit environmental building consultancy and becoming the Living Future Institute of Australia's Executive Director. Stephen’s work has included the development of global environmental assessment methods, designing and managing building retrofits, being one of Australia’s two Living Building Challenge auditors, and embedding sustainable development into educational curriculum. Several of his projects – both private and public sector – have been recognised in the industry for progressing “green building”.

This event has been organised in collaboration with Adelaide Sustainability Connect.
