Program Notes:
“on death,” started as a personal meditation on the death of both of my grandfathers in 2012. As the piece evolved, however, I felt the need to make the compositional process more social and conversational, so I informally interviewed friends and family members about their experiences of death. Through these conversations I discovered new perspectives on the significance of death, life, and the complimentary relationship between, and I like to think that all these voices shine through in the music in some way. The piece vaguely resembles the trajectory of a single life. The first movement, “Gestation,” begins in the womb and travels through the screams of birth. The second movement, “Too Young For This Meditation,” meanders through carefree dances of youth, angst-ridden realizations of mortality, and into a final stage of slowing down and deterioration.
