وصلت التوترات بين الصين وتايوان إلى أعلى مستوياتها منذ حوالي 30 عاما على خلفية زيارة رئيسة مجلس النواب الأميركي نانسي بيلوسي للجزيرة. زيارة اعتبرتها بيجين "استفزازاً" بعد التزام واشنطن بعدم إقامة علاقات رسمية مع تايوان التي تعتبرها الصين جزءا من أراضيها.

ونظّمت الصين أوسع مناورات عسكرية قرب تايوان، وكثفت خطواتها "الانتقامية" معلنة وقف الحوار مع واشنطن حول قضايا عدّة، من بينها تغيّر المناخ ومكافحة المخدرات والمحادثات العسكرية.

فلماذا تستفز الولايات المتحدة الصين في قضية تايوان؟ وهل ستندلع مواجهة عسكرية بين بيجين وواشنطن على خلفية تايوان؟

Starting a conversation

To start a conversation in an informal social situation - like a party - it’s a good idea to find light, friendly topics to talk about.

For example you could: offer a compliment:

A: I like your shoes.
B: Oh thanks, I bought them last week.

Or, find something you have in common, like work, studies, movies or sport:

A: What are you studying?
B: I’m studying zoology at La Trobe.
A: Really? Do you have Professor Duncan?

Or you could ask about something more general, like the weather, or the area you live in.

A: I can’t believe how hot it’s been. How are you coping with the heat?

When you first meet someone it’s best to avoid personal topics, like money, politics, or personal appearance.

For example, you might avoid asking how much money someone makes:

A: You’re a lawyer? How much do you earn?
B: That’s none of your business.

It’s also best to avoid commenting on someone’s physical appearance.

A: You’re really skinny, what do you eat?
B: That’s really none of your business.

Asking about age can also be seen as rude:

A: How old are you?
B: Excuse me? I’m not telling you that.

Learn English 57 Increase your English Understanding and Fluency: Hear, Listen, See, Look and Watch

Learn English 62 "Learn the 100 Most Common English Words and their Grammar" even though you don't need it to speak English sometimes knowing common English grammar can be useful.

For today’s podcast, I thought I would give you something a bit different. Normally, because the idea of Adept English is that you learn through listening, I don’t really go into grammar or the structure of the language very much. But I also realise that many of you are learning English through traditional courses – the ones which do teach you how to read and write English, rather than speaking it. And these courses often focus on grammar – so I thought today that I’d give you a little help understanding English grammar. You don’t really need it to speak the language and be fluent – but you do need it for most English language college courses and a little bit of knowledge goes a long way, so even if you are primarily interested in English conversation, this is still helpful, I think.
