This is an extremely sad song, made at an extremely sad moment. Whoever struggled with depression knows exactly what "extremely sad" means. This song was made for people that feel really sad, and doesn't try to be entertaining.

The vocals were artificially produced, but no AI was used. Those were created using tools that existed before AI singing was a thing, and were pretty challenging to make.
