In this episode I'm in Chelsea, England with Moojan Momen - medical doctor by day, academic by night! Moojan has authored dozens of books and papers on a variety of topics ranging from things like 'The Baha'i Faith and Hinduism', to 'The God of Baha'u'llah'. Moojan tells me what led him to research and writing, and he also shares his thoughts on what makes the Baha'i Faith unique. We discuss the emphasis Baha'u'llah places on consultation, and we also look at how certain social structures can change if we want them to, and the importance of that change coming from the grassroots. Episode 32: Moojan Momen

In this online presentation we will take a lightning tour of the Writings of the Bab. We will briefly survey the state of knowledge of the manuscript sources, summarize the existing available translations, and introduce some of the secondary literature. We will look at the fascinating interplay between form and content in His Writings, address some recurring themes, and examine one possible periodization of His short ministry. The goal will be to provide serious students with an orientating framework and to point the way to resources that invite deeper independent study.

Steven Phelps received dual bachelors degrees in physics and philosophy from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University, specializing in cosmology. He served at the Bahá’í World Center in Haifa, Israel for 13 years in its Research Department, where he coordinated the indexing and collation of the Bahá’í Sacred Writings and their translation from Persian and Arabic into English. During that period he concurrently held a research position in the Physics Department at the Technion University in Haifa and published original research on the masses of nearby galaxies. He currently resides in the Portland area with his wife and three daughters.

Hafez of Shiraz (d.1390) is arguably the most famous of medieval Iran’s great poets. More than six centuries after his death, Hafez’s verses continue to inspire, console, and provoke us today.

Listen to Dr. Dominic Parviz Brookshaw (Associate Professor of Persian Literature at the University of Oxford, and Senior Research Fellow in Persian at Wadham College, Oxford) give a one-hour presentation on Hafez and his contemporaries who imitated one another’s poems, challenged one another repeatedly in verse, and vied with one another to secure lucrative royal patronage. Dr. Brookshaw examines the motivations behind these acts of imitation in order to present a more balanced reading of Hafez, one that stands in opposition to the traditional depiction of the poet, and is, consequently, more faithful to Hafez’s historical reality.

This lecture was presented on Friday, Sept 27, 2019 at UBC Robson Square, by UBC's Department of Asian Studies and Arts Alumni Department, as part of the Alireza Ahmadian Lecture in Persian and Iranian Studies.
