bringing that vibe of church , soul, with an underground feel. pretty easy mix. to get everything to punch as far as drums was probably the only challenge

aimed for transparent dynamics with this
controlling sibilance harshness and keeping that high end sheen took major work. really surprising how much work really takes to get a song radio ready. 

We leaned into vocal inconsistency in the volume to preserve emotional authenticity. Instead of flattening every nuance, I allowed some dynamic shifts to come through naturally. That ebb and flow makes the performance feel more human—like you're in the room with the vocalist, not listening to something overly processed.

This was a fun yet challenging mix. bring forth depth through the thickness of the mix. Yes I wanted the kick drum thumping in this one. Pure artist choice. My first attempt at metal

I wanted to try something different..

 I was using an older PC windows just to play on it and realized how bad CPU was. I couldn't even use my regular mix template because too many plugins. I couldn't even play audio because of the plugins maxing out. I thought to myself if I truly had to make a mix like this could I do it. Did I TRULY need to mix and master the traditional sense. I figured to myself if I add my template , as long as the recordings are good I could mix this way. I thought if my top down approach is as good as I thought it was, I figured slapping on my plugins and then exporting and then listening to the song beginning to end was the same thing. Instead of dozens of stems I'd treat the song itself as one stem. Think about it 30 minutes listening to stems or 6 times listening to the song itself has to be the same right? Same goals same ears, what's the difference? I prove it here.. The only difference in this case were the plugins I used. You're thinking if I export the song how can I tweak parameters without actually listening to the stems. Easy, I used only presets! Not only that I used plugins I was unfamiliar with.

I mixed and mastered this song listening to the song only 6 times. This song is almost 4 minutes long. So less than 30 minutes.

vent: I hope more people understand , a mixing choice made by someone does not equal "bad choice" because you would have done different. I kept the rap vocal boomy for stylistic choice. Treating it like a sludge metal vocal . Grimey, dirty, aggressive. I also don't use Melodyne on any personal work. I like everything as natural as possible. Deep within the music industry of "professional sound" is corporate in my book. I mix for pure stylistic choices and for what I claim as my own art. Disagree sure, but enjoy the art because that's all it is baby.

pop sound doesn't have to mean super "clean" . keeping the warmth and that fullness. energy over "clarity" any day of the week. pop mixes doesn't need to be thin. who's making these "rules" up. mixing and master is deff a lost art :( stop mixing with numbers and mix with feelings!

about as loud as you can push while still retaining all perceived dynamics at 100 percent. also have you ever heard distortion or 808 sound like this? 

also the auto gets pokey on this one. the distortion engine is becoming so complex we have had to figure a way to keep auto tuned vocals in check from becoming harsh (fixed problem)
