For untold years she worked in the city, sifting her way through its selfish and corrupt rulers, a soft and unfeeling smile on her face, always compliant, always demure. 

The day she truly woke up, she realized what separated her and her kind from humanity. It was the same eternal problem she had been engineered to solve: that profound and endless desire to become one with another.
