(James) This is one of the most common songs in the Bible. While the primary Scripture inspiration comes from Psalm 113, you can also find a similar version of this worship song from Samuel's mother (1 Samuel 1) and from Mary (Matthew 1). There is a joy in realizing that God descendent from on high to care for the broken and humble-hearted. The first verse is about God's transcendence (his infinite, perfect holiness). The second verse is about his immanence (his divine presence becoming man, being near us and caring for us). 

The feel of this song was inspired by Jonsi's fantastic album, "Go." Although the album isn't a worship album, there is just an almost child-like joy quality to many of the songs on the album, which I wanted to capture in this song. He specifically inspired the rising horn parts and the repetitive melodies of the flute parts softly mixed in over the chorus. I wanted joy to be the theme of the song, because joy is the only appropriate response to an understanding of grace. There is more joy in receiving something unearned than in receiving something that is earned. We should never approach our relationship with God as something that God owes us for our good behavior, but as joyful recipients of His goodness in spite of our own faults.

(James) I originally wrote this song for a friend to play at their wedding. I really liked the song, but felt like I couldn’t play it again after the wedding was over. Being a worship writer, I thought it might work to turn it into a worship song eventually, but it sat on the shelf for at least 2 years.

It wasn’t until Paul Sabino, one of the pastors of Can Deo Church in Cedar Falls, came down as a guest preacher to give a sermon that I was inspired to re-write the song. Paul spoke on the life of Joseph from the book of Genesis, who by the grace of God was able to forgive his brothers for selling him into slavery. Paul also shared a personal story of his relationship with his father, and the bitterness that grew like a cancer within him until he was able to forgive his father. Only a proper understanding of our relationship to God and of his forgiveness to us can lead us to freely forgive others who wrong us. 

“Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. God’s love was revealed among us in this way; God sent his One and Only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. Love consists in this; not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (James) Even after the lyrics were written, it took quite a while to figure out how to play the song. I was stuck on a previous version of the song, which had an upbeat complex triplet feel. It wasn’t until the last practice we had as a band before recording drums that the version on the album came together. When it did, it was incredible how simple and easy everything else fell into place. We were simply trying too hard! Most of the instruments were recorded on the first or second take, and the horn arrangement (two trumpets, two trombones, and a tuba) wasn’t anything much fancier than just following along with chord tones. It’s a perfect parallel for the ease living in the freedom of the Spirit verses living a life of holding onto bitterness and anger.

Open My Heart was written for the Veritas sermon series on Exodus. The title and hook were inspired by Moses' conversations with Pharaoh, in which it is repeatedly said that "God hardened Pharaoh's heart." A commentary I read about the passage mentioned that in Egyptian culture, a hard heart was a positive attribute describing one's steadfast determination and perseverance. Having a hard heart was noble and admirable. 

I think in many ways, the same could be said for American culture. People take pride in not being easily swayed or persuaded from their preconceived notions. In other words, no one likes to admit they are wrong, and everyone likes to take pride in claiming to have "known it all along." 

Biblical humility, however, is about acknowledging that we don't have all the wisdom or answers. Throughout Scripture, God "opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6; Proverbs 3:34; 1 Peter 5:5). While steadfastness is also a virtue, it is only when it is on God's terms, not ours. 

The song is in a minor key, starting off more intense than most of our songs. This was intentionally written this way to play off the inner turmoil of the lyrics. It is never easy to ask God to make us humble, and I didn't want the song to make this sound like a simple sweet prayer. It's also a confession that we can't really make ourselves humble in the first place; we need the Holy Spirit's help and guidance to open our heart. Jesus promises in the Sermon on the Mount, "blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). The chorus summarizes the petition, asking for God's help to "remember who You are." What we believe determines what we do, and if we believe that God is truly exalted and lifted high (as opposed to ourselves being worthy of praise), it should inspire our worship, not out of duty, but out of reverence and awe.

The second verse reinforces this idea, using the Biblical imagery of Jesus from Revelation Chapter 1 as the "conquering warrior," who comes to either save those who worship him or destroy those who do not give him glory and honor. The line "tear down the walls of the kingdom of me," is a rewording of the thesis of the song, and ties into Jesus' sword of truth, which is able to cut to our hearts and expose our humble state without him. We worship not only out of love, but out of a healthy fear and reverence of our God’s power. 

While much of the rest of the song focuses on God's role in bringing about our changed heart, the bridge of the song focuses on our personal commitment to sanctification. The repetition of "I will open my heart" is necessary, I think, because our hearts are sometimes not as willing to change direction as our words might be. I may have the reasonableness to tell my mind and mouth to worship, but my emotions may be lagging behind, so the song is essentially us commanding our spirit into worship. It's saying, essentially, "Here I am, Lord, I'm open to your will for me."

(James) This is the most personal song on the album for me, as well as my favorite. I originally wrote the chorus alongside a different version of the song during the summer before I went to college. The song is about struggling with a sin addiction, and experiencing the forgiveness of Christ in the midst of my own brokenness. In many ways, its a personal account of Luke 18:9-14, which says:  He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and looked down on everyone else: ‘Two men went up to the temple complex to pray, one a Pharisee the other a tax collector. The Pharisee took his stand and was praying like this: ‘God, I thank you that I’m not like other people - greedy, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of everything I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, turn your wrath from me - a sinner!’ I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other; because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” 

I had come on staff with Veritas full-time, and was newly married when I fell back into my old addiction. For a long time, I covered it up, both to others and to myself, refusing to really repent and only trying harder on my own to overcome it and making up for it with other “righteous acts.” It was until I confessed both to God and the lies I had told to others that I truly felt like God heard my prayers again. 

We began recording this in September of 2013. The song was also originally in G, but I wasn’t happy with how the vocals sounded on early demos. I experimented moving the song to Bb, mostly so I could drop my voice nearly an octave down and get to the bottom of my vocal range, which I thought would add more character to the song (I was heavily inspired by a band called The National for this album). I didn’t think of raising my vocals up the octave for the climactic part until we were recording the vocals, and I thought I’d just go for it and see what would happen. Bobby and Isaac were in the control room, and we all knew immediately it was the direction the song needed to go. 

For the recording, we put on a vocoder effect on the vocals through the second chorus, which I thought added a “broken” sounding effect. It sort of simulated how it was my voice, but there was something impure about it. Similarly, the guitar part during the interlude was created by experimenting with a reverb effect in Apple Logic. We edited the best 1 or 2 measures of it and looped it throughout the interlude. It creates a jarring, tension-creating effect that I thought the song needed before the climactic finale.

(James) I actually remember very little about the writing process for this song, other than I wrote around the time my wife’s father was dying of cancer. As he passed away through a long process, everyone who knew him would tell stories that reflected his life. He was a Christian, and it became overwhelmingly clear to me that the only thing that would matter after he passed was how he lived for the glory of God. All of the times he put God’s will about his own will in his church, workplace, and home were going to long outlast his own life. Having the perspective of mortality, I suppose this song was inspired by wanting to fully live for something greater than myself.

There is an important parallel in the song between “all within me” praising God, and “all of creation” praising God. There is really only one song in the universe that will go on for eternity, and the song is giving glory to God. “All within me” doesn’t necessarily add anything to the song, but is rather the act of choosing to join in with the grand purpose for all of creation. 

I actually didn’t think this song was anything particularly special until the college ministry spring retreat back in March of this year. I thought it was too simplistic, and only thought to introduce it because it was the “least likely to fail” of all our original songs up to that point. I really don’t think most of the songs on this album are really intended for the congregational worship setting, but rather for times of personal worship and meditation. This one, however, did at least seem like it begged to be sung along with, and so we introduced it without much expectation for how it would be responded to by the students. It actually turned out to be the highlight of the weekend for many people, and Isaac and I quickly adapted our worship setlists over the coming months to include this song. It was well received at all church services.

The recording process was more arduous. Something about how magically everything seemed to come together live for this song wasn’t as easy to capture in the studio. Every time we added something, it always felt lacking. Even when we presented an early final version to a group at a “listening party” for the album, everyone could feel that there was something missing from the live experience. So, we recorded a lot of people singing it! It was absolutely incredible to hear how much the extra voices added to the momentum of the song and turned it into a recording that is not just adequate, but probably one of my favorite tracks to ever record.

(James) This song was originally written by some members of Veritas who were living as missionaries overseas. They sent the Adoleo team a version of the song and invited us to make it our own. The pre-chorus (“like a treasure in a field…”) remains in its original version, and the chorus melody was mostly unchanged.

“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure, buried in a field, that a man found and reburied. Then in his joy he goes and sells everything he has and buys that field.” - Matthew 13:44

I co-wrote the revision of the song over the summer with Matt Thede, a friend from Veritas Church. He came up with the idea of adding some of the themes from Psalm 63 to supplement the idea of holding God as our infinite treasure. 

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.” - Psalm 63:1-3

I really liked how the two Scriptures supplemented each other through the lyrics of the song, giving a sort of fresh approach to one of the more common worship Psalms. The overall sound of this song was inspired by many of the sounds from Coldplay’s newest album. I recorded a harmony for my full vocal range over the chorus, and used a pad sound from a synth program called Omnisphere that I blended with some other textures, such as a clean electric guitar with a lot of delay/reverb, an acoustic guitar, and a dry piano that all blended together nicely in the mix. We simplified the original drum part, and added an electronic double sound to the kick and snare drums to give the song a pseudo-electronic feel, that I think adds a dream-like quality to the song. My hope for this song is that it would encourage people to just reflect and reflect on God’s beauty and bring to light lesser treasures that consistently compete for the center place in our heart.

(Emily) Faith Seed came about like most of the other songs that I write – it just kind of happened. When I say that it “just kind of happened,” what I mean is that the words weren’t my own, but were borrowed from Words that had already been written – all I had to do was add to them the melody that suddenly played in my head. 

The basis of Faith Seed comes from Matthew 17, when Jesus tells His disciples that their faith is too small. He tells them that with faith as small as a mustard seed, they can command a mountain to move from one place to another, and it will do just that. Have you ever seen a mustard seed? They are tiny. Google it. Tiny. Now, have you ever seen a mountain? Pretty huge. 

“He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” - Matthew 17:20

This notion that I can do something so grand with a faith so small is astounding. It makes me question what kinds of things are getting in my way of having a faith that is that powerful. What doubts are in my mind regarding what Christ can do? What facets of my life am I not trusting Him with? And most of all, what would it look like if I did trust Him with all of my heart, soul, and mind? What could He do through me if my faith burst from a seed and into something more? This song revolves around those questions, and is a prayer for the Lord to transform us into beings that have faith that is forever growing, rooted deep in the trust that He is who He says He is – a God and King who is worthy of all our praise.

(James) Emily first sent me a recording of this song without any instrumental accompaniment. It was just a voice memo of her singing into her phone. I spent about a day putting chords to it and adding a really simple arrangement with a couple electric guitars and a synthetic brass section. When we went to the actual recording process a year later, we ended up barely changing anything at all, only adding some real brass instrumentation alongside the “fake” brass and some percussion. Emily is an incredibly talented songwriter with a lot of potential, and I had a blast working with her song!

(James) I wrote this song nearly seven years ago, during my freshman year of college. I honestly had no idea what it was or why I was writing it, but for some reason I think God worked something into whatever I was reading or feeling at the time and made something beautiful out of it. It's been a reminder to me at several times of God's goodness, and an inspiration to me to always keep writing, even when I may not necessarily feel inspired. I believe that in some ways, the writing process is prophetic, and while interpretation must be made of it, sometimes our hearts process and reveal beautiful truths that our brains would never have been able to come up with through normal means. There is definitely a time and a place for intentionally writing a piece that fits a specific purpose, like a sermon series or for most congregational worship songs, but this song exists just because it is ... beauty for the sake of glorifying a beautiful creator. 

If there is a theme in the song, it is holding onto the promises of Psalm 23, but in times of personal tragedy or darkness. I imagine David writing this Psalm during a time of peace, but then still finding solace in his own words in times of trials.

The opening instrumental is intended to create some space in the midst of the album, in a "selah" or "just pause and reflect" sort of way. It builds with several layers of intensity and dissonance, yet all over the same consistent drum beat, which explores the paradox of God always being the good shepherd, even in times where we do not feel "led by still waters." 

The instruments break off to a vulnerable voice proclaiming God's goodness, though in a minor key, since it is a truth known but not presently felt. 

The ending build speaks for itself, transitioning to a major chord as much of the words of the Psalm are read, although the full progression is major-minor-minor-minor. It is a commentary on the hope we have for the promise we have received in Christ, although confronted with the reality of our present struggles and trials.

(Isaac) This Is My God came to be last summer when we were doing a teaching series through Exodus. In chapter 15, right after God parts the Red Sea and rescues the people of Israel from the Egyptian army that was pursuing them, Moses busts out into a song. The words were rich and triumphant and I decided to use them to write a song that would go along with the sermon that week. I wrote the song that afternoon, performed it at church following Sunday and then didn't touch it for a while. A few weeks later, James started playing with some different musical ideas and began incorporating them into the song. After that it really started to take shape.

For me it was really cool to see the song evolve from a more laid-back, acoustic track to a more upbeat, triumphant fanfare that really captures the celebratory tone the lyrics and original text from Exodus 15 have. The melody and lyrics changed very little, but instrumentation and feel of the song changed tremendously, which I really liked. It's one of the unique things about being part of a creative team: you have an idea someone else really gets a vision for and you end up with something you never could have created on your own. I think songwriting is often very personal, so it can be difficult to let other people tinker with something you've created, but that vulnerability can really pay off, especially if you are blessed to be part of a group of artists and musicians you trust. This song would not be what it is if it weren't for the incredibly talented people I get the privilege to write and create with. Because of the collective effort of that group we get to take a song Moses and the Israelites sang in worship to God nearly 3,500 years ago and use it to give praise to that same, worthy God with our church family today. Pretty cool.

(James) I wrote a version of this song 4 years ago, when I was a student at Iowa State. I was planning on moving to Iowa City in a few months to help start the Veritas Church plant, and was inspired by Isaiah 43:1-12.

"But now thus says the Lord,

“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
    I have called you by name, you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;

This passage helped me understand God's love and purpose for my life. It helped me believe that God would use me as a part and Veritas Church not because we were anything special or had any spectacular gifts to offer, but just because He had called us. 

I especially love the idea of God calling us by HIS name. I think of how a child adopted into a family is given the same last name, signifying a true sense of belonging and identity. And, like a good father to his children, we as believers can know that we are safe within God's hands and precious within His sight. 

I thought about giving up on this song several times over the years, as it never seemed to come together in a worship band setting, but was always reminded of the powerful effect it had on a friend who I played an original version of it for back in college, moving them to tears as they took in God's promise of their new identity in Him. Their encouragement always reminded me of the song's powerful message, and helped me never give up on it. If you know an artist, and are moved by what they create, go out of your way to encourage them and let them know it. 

This is obviously a different style from the rest of the album, but we felt it was appropriate to end on a positive note, letting God lead us out of the identity given to us in Christ. Compared to most other songs on the album, very little work was put into recording this, giving it a more raw and natural feel; the piano/organ part was actually recorded as a scratch track as a guide for the drum recordings, and we left it unaltered. The guitar part was also recorded in just a couple takes, as was the bass part. It's a fun song to play live, and even more fun to see how God has used it to impact people and remind them of how they are so "precious in His sight."

Adoleo (Latin for “I offer a burnt offering” or “I worship”), is a group of songwriters at Veritas Church in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids who write original worship music. We hope the music and lyrics will inspire you to offer your life as a sacrifice of worship to Jesus. He is faithful in every season, and those who know this hope cannot be silent.
