BEYOND COAST

Imagine, if you will, a little farmer girl. She lives in the outskirts of the galaxy, on the surface of a barren moon, its name forgotten long ago, with barely an atmosphere. Her farm she got from their parents. They died, both, on a war no one speaks about anymore, so she has to run whatever is left of them. She wakes up early (though the sun rarely sets) and goes to sleep at nine. She waters alien crops all day, then pulls whatever alien weeds she's found. A few animals she takes care of: a friendly cow, two fat pigs, a proud rooster who took care of the hens and a cat called Bread who had lived way too many years for its species. There's also a droid she uses from time to time, though the thing, a relic nonetheless, barely works. After work she sits down on the porch of the little house she grew in, the little brown house near the barn painted cliché red. There she stares at the stars through the dome, wondering what's out there. Once a month some merchants come their way and tell her stories while selling their goods and buying her crops. Those are stories about great empires expanding across many solar systems, about great peoples known for the wonders they have built, about small people, simple people who made it big and became heroes and did good! She could almost see herself there, travelling the stars on a big ship, wondering about the kinds of worlds out there: ringed worlds, desert worlds, snowy planets and gas giants. But, oh, how could she get out of that dome? How could such a small creature venture itself in the vastness of space? And what about the farm? That farm--the only remnant of her parents, and the animals, they could not be left alone. She went to sleep that night wondering if her destiny was bound to that barren moon nobody had a name for. She would dream of adventures and heroes, and of love maybe, and of habitable worlds and some hazardous awaiting for her--be it known to her or not, and then this song plays.
