First Encounter of Adopted Sun (Trio)

Adopted Sun is an unscripted collaboration of NYC improvisers. Their music is born in the moment, guided by each member's intuition, listening sensitivity and fluency in the languages of improvisation and composition. Their first meeting in September 2022 was planned as a trio with David Crowell, Kenny Warren and Leonid Galaganov, and was later joined by Aquiles Navarro. Growing into a quintet with Ayumi Ishito, the premiere of this expanding incarnation will be recorded at 2B&2C on January 28th, 2024.

David Crowell:

David’s music, described by the New York Times as “coiled and contained, but pulsing with small, ecstatic fibrillations,” and by Gramophone as “interacting with seamless animation or stillness,” explores the rich intersections of contemporary classical, jazz, and various improvisational styles.
His work has been performed internationally by prominent ensembles including A Far Cry, Sandbox Percussion, JACK Quartet, and Argus Quartet, and been released commercially on New Amsterdam, Innova, National Sawdust Tracks, Coviello Classics, and Skirl.
David performed as a member of the Philip Glass Ensemble from 2007-16, with prominent performances including a two-year international tour of Einstein on the Beach and ten full performances of Music in 12 Parts. He has worked in numerous capacities with the celebrated new music organization Bang on a Can and leads his own composer performer ensembles Empyrean Atlas and Clocks or Clouds.

Ayumi Ishito:

Ayumi Ishito was born and raised in Ishikawa, Japan. At the age of 19, she began playing tenor saxophone in a college big band at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto. In 2007, Ayumi received a scholarship to attend Berkee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. She spent three years there studying performance and composition.
After graduating from Berklee, Ayumi moved to New York in 2010. Ayumi has been playing with many different groups. One of her recent projects Open Question received 4 stars review in DownBeat magazine in 2022. Also, her another project The Spacemen was selected for the Best Jazz of 2021 in Bandcamp.
As a composer, Ayumi has been leading her quintet since 2011 and performing her compositions. The band released two albums, “View From A Little Cave” in 2016 and “Midnite Cinema” in 2019.

Aquiles Navarro:

Aquiles Navarro is a New York-based trumpeter, composer and DJ of Panamanian heritage. He is also the CEO & Founder of River Down Records, a label that focuses on documenting and expanding the creative sounds and minds of Panamá. Aquiles considers himself an improviser, coalescing his range of influences into a unified sonic vocabulary that can be incorporated across genre and medium. Navarro is a part of the liberation-oriented free jazz collective, Irreversible Entanglements, and he has a duo project with Brooklyn-based drummer Tcheser Holmes, entitled Heritage of the Invisible. In 2020, Navarro was recognized by a variety of jazz publications. He was nominated for a US Artists Fellowship, a competitive funding award that recognizes the most compelling artists working and living in the United States. His group Irreversible Entanglements was voted as Group of the Year by El Intruso’s Critics’ Poll, a yearly vote of the top international jazz critics and writers, receiving votes and recognition from critics who write in top jazz publications from Norway and Italy to the United States.
The Guardian also included Navarro in their list of “30 New Artists for 2021,” and said of Navarro: “His playing features glorious improvised fanfares as if announcing the arrival of some cosmic dignitary, as well as repeated melodic themes, providing a brightly lit entry point into jazz’s outer regions.”

Kenny Warren:

Trumpeter/composer Kenny Warren grew up in Denver, studied jazz at SUNY Purchase and has been in Brooklyn since 2006. He has made over a dozen varied records of his own music. His trio Sweet World with cellist Christopher Hoffman and drummer Nathan Ellman-Bell will release an album on Out of Your Head in spring 2024. A new duo record with pianist Bobby Avey should be out this summer. Recent side person work includes recordings and performances with The Angelica Sanchez Nonet and Stephan Crump's Slow Water.

Leonid Galaganov:

Leonid Galaganov is a New York City based composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist from a Russian Old Ritualist settlement in Estonia. Shaped by an eclectic background in jazz, classical, world and spiritual music, his music feeds on a broad range of both traditional and experimental influences. Since moving to NYC in 2012, Leonid has premiered original and collaborative music at venues like Roulette, Cornelia Street Cafe, The Stone, Judson Church, Clemente Soto Velez, Downtown Music Gallery, along with performances at the Vision Festival and the Rubin Museum. Frequent co-creators include William Parker, Kyoko Kitamura, Daniel Carter, Zack Clarke and many others, and he is a member of the chamber jazz quartet Jump Off This Bridge. Leonid has received commissions from the American Modern Ensemble, Cassatt String Quartet and Ensemble Mise-En. Featured on 20 record releases, he has also done interdisciplinary work with dance, poetry, theater, film, paintings, and has toured around Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Brazil, the UK and the US.
