Running out of Time

When I originally heard this piece I was in the percussion section of the Northwestern State University Wind Symphony. We were reading lots of music on the first day and this piece came up. Before rehearsal, the director gave me the score so I could assign parts. I knew right off the bat this was not going to be a typical concert march, as it says in the subtitle. 

No one knew this piece of music; it was pretty much brand new. We started playing and it was pretty low key--simple rhythm in the snare drum, a relatively tame bass line in the tuba section, a few other effect type things happening in the percussion section. Then the rest of the band came in, namely the high brass. Everyone was pretty shocked, but we kept going. For 5 minutes it continued, and it totally lived, and still does live, up to its title. It may not be the most complicated Mackey piece, but I knew from early on it was destined to make it to an electric guitar.

After a year long production cycle, Celldweller has been slowly revealing bits and pieces of his third full length, studio artist album, which showcases a return to the more formative complex electronic and heavy metal elements that defined the unique hybrid that is Celldweller. From tracks like “Good L_ck (Yo_’re F_cked)” which sound like something straight out of a neo-futuristic punk rock dive bar, to the soft and somber “Just Like You” that swells with acoustic guitars, modular synths and melodic vocals into an epic cinematic ballad. Every track brings something completely unique yet distinctly Celldweller to the table. Equal parts score and soundtrack to a science fiction movie that hasn’t been created yet, this album delivers an unparalleled experience that transports each listener to their own little world inhabited by all of the iconic characters presented throughout the chapter cycle leading up to the release of the final album.

This arrangement of Rocket Surgery was at first written as an attempt at orchestral EDM. While that isn’t quite how the end result sounded, it is one of the most energetic pieces in my archive, and the bouncy, dance-paced feel is still there. It was performed live by Explorchestra in April 2019.
This recording features soloists John Gallivan (guitar), Chris DeDonato (alto sax), Sam LaGrego & Brad Pheps (percussion), Julian Drevet (tenor sax), Tyler Seccafico (clarinet), Naor Isak (contrabass), & Michelle Terry (cello).
