What a year it was for Spunsugar. Among the most promising acts to emerge from Scandanavia in 2020, after a raft of glorous early singles drew plaudits from all quarters of the English press the Malmo-based trio released debut LP Drive-Through Chapel, which more or less lit up the boards in their native Sweden. Kicking off what will be a even bigger year for the gothgaze dreamers, January sees the release of their new single ‘You Never Turn Around’.


As Oscar Wilde once put it “There is no romance without tragedy” An uncharacteristically poptastic offering from the Swedes, ‘(You Never) Turn Around’ is synthwave melodrama about the great tragedy of lukewarm indifference. Like Alvvays covering Gary Newman, and ever so macabre – this is Spunsugar remember – it's the trio at their most unashamedly flamboyant. Sad never sounded so spectacular. 

"A little less steel, a little more silk: that was the mantra when "(You Never) Turn Around" was recorded. It’s the final song in a trilogy about being in a relationship with a person who’s emotionally unavailable ("Time Enough at Last" and "Dial Up Tone” from the debut album are the first and second parts). 

The lyrics are inspired by a hazy memory of a film. In the film the theory goes that when they say goodbye but turn to look at you one last time, you know it’s love.    
Make no mistake, this is a true Spunsugar song, so you’re guaranteed a meaty rock song. But this single is pop: dreamier than previous releases and crisper in its construction, with a compelling intro, groovier tempo and the sort of singalong feel that your granny might appreciate. Spunsugar might be accused of having sold our souls, but that don't bother us. We never had one to begin with." Spunsugar

The meaning behind this song is something I've chosen to remain a mystery. Being a music artist in 2021, we’re encouraged to share every little detail about our lives with our audience. While this has opened up many opportunities for artists to have unique and personal interactions with fans - something which we encourage and take full advantage of in Crystal Cities - there are some things that perhaps should be kept to ourselves in order to set boundaries and protect and respect the privacy of other people... In this instance, I want the context of this song to be left up to the listener’s own interpretation.

Drop Your Arms is the lead single from the band's upcoming debut album 'Little Pictures Without Sound' and an introduction to SENSES. The song is an instant, upbeat and energetic 'call to arms' and written as a reminder to people to fight for what is important to them and to not be afraid to drop your arms and learn to love your vulnerabilities. The lyrics quote "and I won't hold back to the feeling" - in current times these words resonate deeply. The song is about giving people hope, fighting for all the good in life and celebrating being dreamers.....because we all are.

The song sums up the current social and political climate but showing that better times are on the way.

“Resistance,” the 2nd single from Yo Kinky’s debut EP (out 02/28/21), finds the duo exploring a more delicate yet simultaneously strong and confident mood. With Unish’s spaced-out, rockabilly-tinged guitar bouncing through the song’s driving, hypnotic layers of sound, they paint a sonic landscape that yearns for much-needed intimacy in a time of social distancing and isolation. As Wight’s vocals float above the surface, singing “Love is all we breathe” and “Swing me off my feet,” she transports the listener to places of rich yet strange beauty. “Resistance” alludes to keeping sanity amidst chaos with the warm and hopeful delivery of “Sight got back/I feel different/A flicker in the distance,” and finding contentment from the small things in life: “Everybody’s just around the corner now/Everything I need is just a short walk down the street.” This follow-up is sure to leave listeners with a sense of triumph against all odds.
