Shalanda Baker, Deputy Director For Energy Justice, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

This year Shalanda Baker was appointed to the Biden-Harris Administration as the Deputy Director for Energy Justice in the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the Department of Energy. Prior to her appointment, she was a professor of Law, Public Policy, and Urban Affairs at Northeastern University. Shalanda is also the co-founder and co-director of the Initiative for Energy Justice.

Shalanda Baker, is also the author of the outstanding book, "Revolutionary Power: An Activist's Guide to the Energy Transition."

Welcome to the Mass EV Action Challenge. This quarter's topic is on Mass Transit and Environmental Justice.

Rishi Reddi, Director of Environmental Justice, MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs

Rishi Reddi has worked in a broad array of substantive environmental areas. Most recently, she advised state programs in developing and implementing regulations under the Massachusetts’ Global Warming Solutions Act, helped to develop and implement the Massachusetts grant program resulting from the national Volkswagen Settlement, and was the lead attorney for the Massachusetts’ Low Emission Vehicle Program.

Rishi co-founded MassDEP’s first Environmental Justice Committee in the mid-1990s and established the agency’s internal language resource bank, which facilitates communication between the agency and Massachusetts residents with limited proficiency in English.

James Cater, Program Lead - EV Infrastructure, Eversource Energy

James Cater is recognized locally and nationally as an expert on topics related to EV infrastructure and utility-customer partnerships to achieve carbon reduction goals. Through his leadership, the Eversource EV charging program will enable the deployment of close to 3,500 individual charging ports at up to 400 customer sites – creating a robust EV charging station network across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

In this special episode of the AEG podcast, Peter Kelley-Detwiler, Executive Director for Boston Advanced Energy, has an in-depth conversation with Brad Swing, Director of Energy Policy and Programs, City of Boston, Office of the Mayor, Environment, Energy & Open Space. Throughout this episode, the two discuss the main energy goals for the city of Boston, what the vision is for the city five years from now, and Brad shares an overview of Boston's energy fabric today.

One particular focus of the discussion is on the types of transformations that are needed to achieve those goals and the types of conversations and partnerships that will be required, moving forward.  Brad specifically pointed out that he sees the "Advanced Energy Group as a continuation of the kind of stakeholder engagement we've needed to be able to educate ourselves and to explore feasible next steps on these broad consequential and frankly rather daunting initiatives."

Peter, Brad, and many others are getting geared up for the inaugural Boston Advanced Energy Stakeholder Breakfast on Thursday September 14, in anticipation of this event brad shared: "I'm hoping the Advanced Energy Group will serve as something of an opportunity for me to check in monthly with something of a think tank that can help me stay on track with this agenda."

Terry reflected on the Q4 event in which he was a discussion leader: "hat forum is a place where our voice and many other voices can come together and solve some of the biggest problems we are facing".
