Simon Dawes - Sweet Taste of Victory (guitar ending) [INVADER]

1. Moussa Thiobely Ba is part of a big griot family and is a young man of 25 years old. His 1 year old baby hangs on his back and a cigarette hangs from his mouth as he improvises on his electric guitar in front of a small modest room that he have built in the complex of all the griot houses. 
2. "Generation Mbamba", a family of griots band.
3. Tidiane Thiam plays Dannibe (released originally on Sahel Sounds records).
4. We are shielding from the midday sun in a room that is used as a Taylor’s workshop in the village while waiting for the lunch to be ready. Moussa starts to sing.
5. Baye Fall called Lamp sings a praise for Mame Diarra, Sufi Saint Amadou Bamba’s mother. 
6. In between the rainy days, we take out some rugs and some instruments to the green outside the village. Fouta is normally a burn out desert, but rain has brought in all this vegetation. All cousins take turns to play their songs while I record in front of them. This one is by Moussa Thiobely Ba.
7. Samba is a young griot, a cousin of Mousssa. He makes a living playing his electric guitar and singing praisals when people hire him to come over. He always records his performance on his phone and after sends it to me via Whatsapp, so that when I am back in London, a little piece of Fouta Toro is always with me.
8. We are shielding from the midday sun in a room that is used as a Taylors workshop in the village while waiting for the lunch to be ready. Moussa starts to sing a cover of a song I am still yet to find. He begins softly, just as something to do during a calm moment but it turns out to be powerful as everyone joins it a bit. I came to the village to meet Samba & Alessane, Moussa was their cousin, but after this performance I realised that Moussa was an incredible singer too.
9. Baye Fall called Lamp sings a praise for Mame Diarra, Sufi Saint Amadou Bamba’s mother. Lamp is a kind and generous man with an impressive set of dreadlocks who let us put up our tents in his family house yard in a small town of Casamance.
10. Samba sings while his father, a famous griot in the area plays Houddu, the traditional instrument made of carved wood & animal skin and three strings. We just had breakfast and I was getting ready to leave the village slightly nostalgic and saddened to leave. The song brightens the mood.
11. A first call to prayer at dawn in Maata-Moulaana, a semi-autonomous village following Sufi Islamic order. 
12. Laye sings a devotional Baye Fall song by the fire in the evening inside my friend Amdy’s workshop and a place where Baye Falls of the village gather.
13. Bamba Tokara Bamba from ‘Generation Mbamba’ - a griot family band sings his song about a Sufi Saint Amadou Bamba.

At the end of June 2018, in the midst of world cup fever, I caught the overground south from Dalston Junction to visit Paul White, a producer whose work I’ve been a fan of for nearly a decade. First emerging as a leader of of the British beats scene of the late noughties releasing on One Handed Music alongside artists such as Bullion and Mo Kolours, Paul White’s take on instrumentals often sampled the weirder, dustier corners of his considerable record collection, from 70s Polish jazz fusion through to prog rock. Since those beginning, Paul’s frequently collaborated with MCs, first on his ‘Rapping With Paul White’ project, and later with Detroit’s Danny Brown, LA’s Open Mic Eagle, and as one half of Golden Rules, alongside Florida MC, Eric Biddines.

In recent years, Paul’s sound has moved away from sampling as he’s developed new ways of creating. Through re-learning various instruments including the piano and guitar, Paul’s embraced more traditional songwriting practices, albeit with an equally broad palette of influences, as his sophomore solo album ‘Rejuvenate’ demonstrates.

During Paul’s Sound Motives episode we discuss his journey in music from childhood influences and working with his rap heroes, through to prioritising an honest creative journey, in the face of commercial pressures to continue with the tried and tested techniques of his earlier work.

Godriguez first stepped onto the international hip hop scene as the creative force behind Sampa The Great's breakthrough release "The Great Mixtape". His unique blend of jazz and avant-garde samples with a distinctly raw production aesthetic helped secure the mixtapes release through tastemaker label Wondercore Island which saw it receive high rotation from Triple J and recognition around the world including a premiere on OkayPlayer. 

In the year following it's release Godriguez continued to be a major force in the Sampa project, taking on the role of musical director pulling together a stellar line-up of musicians to reinterpret his beats in a live context. This live project performed at major Australian festivals such as Splendour In The Grass and Laneway and played supports for Kendrick Lamar and Fat Freddy's Drop among others.

Since then Godriguez has continued to grow in stature as a solo artist and producer working on original production for Wallace and remixes for Polographia and Winston Surfshirt and playing solo sets at Volumes Festival, Triple J's Mix Up and in support slots for Hiatus Kaiyote at Somerset House in London, Black Milk and Koi Child. His solo productions have also been featured on compilations by Wondercore Island and TAXX as well as received airplay from Triple J and support from major blogs Vice/Noisy, THUMP and Purple Sneakers.

Looking in the future it's the crossover between live music and production that's most exciting for Godriguez pushing the boundaries of improvised music within a framework of hip hop, jazz, soul and psychedelia. Working with the tastiest line-up of instrumentalists he's put together, keep an eye out for the exciting new direction in Godriguez' music.
