Pedro Ricardo, an exciting new signing to Soundway Records, shares "Ode ao gato" - a killer jazz number dedicated to legendary Argentinian saxophonist, Gato Barbieri.

According to Pedro, “for me, this song is anticipation, eagerness for things to come. It features my dear friend Luis on the drums and was inspired by one of my favourites, Gato Barbieri”

Portuguese multi-instrumentalist, DJ and producer Pedro Ricardo will soon release his debut album, ‘Soprem Bons Ventos’, on London, UK based Soundway Records.

Currently based in Berlin, Pedro Ricardo has been releasing music for the past eight years under different aliases via labels such as Extended Records, 1980Lyfers, Wolf Music and his own imprints Hear, Sense and Feel and Pedro’s House. An eclectic DJ and selector, he hosts a radio show on South London's radio Balamii, has guested on Mafalda's NTS show and can be found playing in clubs across all Europe.

“The album translates to ‘Good Winds Blow’”, shares Ricardo. “This idea of good winds blowing is intertwined with the feeling of missing something, and sadness. On a positive note, there is still an overarching sense that happiness also lies ahead. ‘Soprem Bons Ventos’ represents an ode to the past, to those who came before me, connecting with my present and imagining the future.”

Stylistically, Ricardo became entranced with jazz from an early age, while also becoming enamored with folk music – rooted in his childhood in Portugal, now encompassing sounds from Cape Verde, Brazil, and Spain along the way. These crucial influences can be heard on the album, alongside field recordings, and electronics, on ‘Soprem Bons Ventos’. 

The beginnings of ‘Soprem Bons Ventos’ were born in his native city of Porto, but the album’s creative process spanned four countries and five years, finally finding completion after a move to Wood Green, North London. “This album has been following me around for the past five years,” shares Ricardo. “Wherever I went, it came along… but the majority of the recording process came alive in London.”

“The city had a particular effect on me. There are so many people doing so many exciting things, you have to ask yourself, ‘what makes the thing you are creating your own?’ This record has a lot of personal sonic moments like that. That is not to say that I found ‘my sound’, but rather that I found something that I think is special, and truly represents me now. The years when I was making the record also coincide with me moving away from Portugal, away from home  – this feeling is very much present during the record. You can hear it.”

‘Soprem Bons Ventos’ was written, produced, and performed by Ricardo, with cameos from Luís Neto on drums and vocals. The album was also mixed by Neto, and mastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery Studios, featuring original artwork by Gosia Machon.

Four years on from his explorative third full-length ‘Aquamarine,’ Londoner Ash Walker returned in June 2023 with an equally ambitious follow-up, 'Astronaut'. Alongside a plethora of award-winning collaborators and combining a dizzying array of sounds, ‘Astronaut’ hears Walker push his astral shower of rhythm and vibes to new heights. If 'Aquamarine’ was the take-off of his audial spaceship, ‘Astronaut’ is the cosmic voyage reaching terminal velocity; a rocket-powered masterclass spanning jazz, blues, soul, funk, and reggae.

An avid record collector, Walker has DJed far and wide... from the infamous Royal Mail squat party to the canals of Venice, spinning vinyl in Brixton with The Specials to scattering dub across San Francisco and LA. His own production output is similarly exploratory: his journeys have taken him far and wide, from tunnels under the river Thames to recording local percussionists in the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Inspired by a deep dive of sounds from artists including Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, King Tubby, Bo Diddley, 4Hero, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Curtis Mayfield, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich; his first two albums, ‘Augmented 7th’ (2015) and ‘Echo Chamber’ (2016) gained attention from the likes of BBC 6 Music DJs Gilles Peterson, Don Letts and Gideon Coe.

Godriguez first stepped onto the international hip hop scene as the creative force behind Sampa The Great's breakthrough release "The Great Mixtape". His unique blend of jazz and avant-garde samples with a distinctly raw production aesthetic helped secure the mixtapes release through tastemaker label Wondercore Island which saw it receive high rotation from Triple J and recognition around the world including a premiere on OkayPlayer. 

In the year following it's release Godriguez continued to be a major force in the Sampa project, taking on the role of musical director pulling together a stellar line-up of musicians to reinterpret his beats in a live context. This live project performed at major Australian festivals such as Splendour In The Grass and Laneway and played supports for Kendrick Lamar and Fat Freddy's Drop among others.

Since then Godriguez has continued to grow in stature as a solo artist and producer working on original production for Wallace and remixes for Polographia and Winston Surfshirt and playing solo sets at Volumes Festival, Triple J's Mix Up and in support slots for Hiatus Kaiyote at Somerset House in London, Black Milk and Koi Child. His solo productions have also been featured on compilations by Wondercore Island and TAXX as well as received airplay from Triple J and support from major blogs Vice/Noisy, THUMP and Purple Sneakers.

Looking in the future it's the crossover between live music and production that's most exciting for Godriguez pushing the boundaries of improvised music within a framework of hip hop, jazz, soul and psychedelia. Working with the tastiest line-up of instrumentalists he's put together, keep an eye out for the exciting new direction in Godriguez' music.
