After a brief lockdown-prompted hiatus - Duncan Forbes and his new 49North imprint, return for their 3rd outing... a 4-track EP, made up of 2 DF originals and a remix of each. One from the universally revered UK House & Techno don, Mr G; and the other courtesy of Pépe - without doubt one of the most in-demand artists on the underground right now.

The neon-lit, analogue House of 'Bluer Than Blue' kicks things off - it's liquid melodies and propulsive rhythm reeling you right in from the get-go.

'The Next Step' meanwhile, is a vast and sonoros, breakbeat-driven beast - chocked full of otherwordly atmosphere and an alluring sense of the mystical.

Close pal and DF collaborator - Mr G, then takes the shimmering, multi-color heart of 'Bluer Than Blue' and distills it down into one super-tight, bare-bones, swing-loaded roller; topped off with a seductive whispered vocal, skating rides and a perfectly-poised low-end lead.

That is before Pépe wraps things up with his unique spin on 'The Next Step'; for which he keeps the signature mood more or less intact - but brings a more euphoric, wide-eyed optimism to proceedings, as well as an inspired ethereal-meets-junglist central character.

"THB" functions as a stepping point to the notion of this continuum; Sonic artefacts rescued from a forgotten dancefloor and an aura reminiscent of anarchy, cyber- communities and rave-centered movements throughout the last four decades.

Valencia Relief - Bandcamp

on tuesday, flash floods decimated the better part of the southern and western areas of the valencia province, alongside many other points of spain. what followed was a catastrophic event resulting in storm surges, collapsing bridges, thousands stuck on roads and streets, ultimately leading to a death toll that is now estimated in a 100, and unfortunately, rising.

homes, animal shelters, businesses, personal property, and ultimately, families, have been destroyed by this catastrophe. an event that caught thousands out in the street, heading to and from school, work, and daily lives unalerted. severe warnings only got to our phones 10 hours after, despite being warned by weather centres and flood prevention institutions for days. all in all, failed by our government.

i'm putting out a new H0RT4 pack to raise funds for aid. reconstruction of animal shelters, food and water for those who have been cut out of supplies. clothes. fixing homes that are beyond repair and are going to be waiting for help. since tomorrow is bandcamp friday, ALL proceeds from my sales will go to this effect.

I'm extremely fortunate to be in an area of the city that was completely unaffected. Mine and those around them are all safe, but this level of devastation is unbearable. "Horta" stands for "the fields" in valencian, but its also the name we give to our area, and it represents our land and our ways, many of them obliterated.

It's weird to be putting out music right now, but it's my only possible way of contributing for now since im physically away from the city, and music is all i can offer. I'll be on the ground come monday fixing as much as i can, donating food, clothes, blood, and anything necessary.

I ask, possibly for the first time that you share these with as many people as you can. Not interested in the music? please, contribute in the aid, both in person or remotely, from the links uploaded in my stories.

"It feels like at the moment, we're lost in the long dark tunnel. Plenty of dance music seems to operate in a revivalist form, within a regression cycle, it's hard to pinpoint the exact sound of "now" without it referencing other points in history.

"We're trapped in 20th century culture on higher definition screens", poses Mark Fisher in a seminal lecture, and thus, exposes Berardi's concept of the Slow Cancellation of the Future. "Nothing ever really dies, but that's not good". In 1992 it was impossible to imagine the shape of music 6 months into the future, so why are we now constantly going back to these genres?

My aim with this release was to try and participate in the legacy of the Hardcore Continuum within the sonic context of the current world. A hyper-online, overstimulated landscape where our attention is constantly invaded by notification after notification, stimulus after stimulus. I try to materialise this by reshaping sharp noise into pulse, genre staples like the breakbeat get torn apart and forced into a brand new skeleton, and riot-invoking grime chants are repurposed into music set for a bleak now. Jungle, Dub, Grime, Garage, they are all present here, but the heavy gravitational pull of their legacies presents to me as a black hole I've tried to encapsulate in this EP.

I wanted to record a straight-to-the-point mix of heavy club sonics. It goes from breakbeat and machine-funk acid into the more percussive, bassier fringes of my collection. As always, I’m obsessed with the concept of the hardcore continuum, and I like to see in which different ways I can tap into it with my mixes, trying to snip and patch many points of club music history into new collages. We go from Detroit to Manchester to Tokyo, Baltimore, South London and beyond with this one.
