Confluences

Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) was one of the highest regarded French composers for the organ in the 20th-century. His Prélude et fugue sur le nom d'Alain op. 7 was composed in 1942 and dedicated to his friend Jehan Alain. Durufle first played the work at the Palias de Chaillot on December 26, 1942, despite the shortage of paper during World War II the piece was published in October 1943. 

Stephen Tharp recorded this work into the midi at Our Lady of Refuge Church, live and unedited at the request of Joe Vitacco. (It is one of Joe's desert island pieces) It was then recorded out of the organ with the church empty of people. This recording's dazzling conclusion matches the heroic conclusion of the restoration of the pipe organ at Our Lady of Refuge Church. 

This organ was restored by A.R. Schopp's Sons and Quimby Pipe Organs. Their work is extraordinary! Thank you to them and the 1500 people who helped pay for this organ's restoration.

On October 10 of 2010 Professor Thomas Murray, University Organist at Yale performed an organ recital of works by Hindemith, Schumann, Weitz, Goldmark and Locklair on the world-famous Newberry Memorial Pipe Organ. It was built-in 1901 by Hutchings, improved mechanically and almost doubled in size in 1915 by Steere, and entirely rebuilt and greatly enlarged in 1928 by the Skinner Organ Company.

Professor Murray gave JAV Recordings permission to record his organ recital and we both decided to release the Schumann Sketches as a free download. There is no editing of this live performance. The balance of the recital can not be released as the other compositions are copyright protected.

After recording a CD in Notre Dame de Paris in May of 2010 Johann Vexo sat down for an interview with Joe Vitacco. We talked about his life as a musician and what it is like to work at Notre Dame. This also includes 2 extras works not on the CD: Bach's Wachet auf and Franck's Piece Heroique. The extra works were recorded with the same equipment as the CD.
