For this episode of A Reader’s Catalogue, I read excerpts from Phanuel Antwi’s On Cuddling: Loved to Death in the Racial Embrace (Pluto Press, 2023). Informed by Black feminist and queer poetics, Antwi examines how racial violence is enacted through intimacy, while remaining attentive to the fugitive forms of intimacy that emerge in flight from such violence. The racial embrace, Antwi reminds us, enfolds us all—and the more intimately we come to know its workings, the stronger our capacities for resistance and solidarity.
