An ambient-orchestral piece from my forthcoming release 'Seen and Unseen Powers'. This has something of a melancholy feel, and features field recordings (gleaned from Freesound.org) of coyotes howling.

Lost in the Forest (Coyote)

I don't often do remixes, and I can't remember the exact genesis of this one - it was at least 3 years ago when I produced it. Anyway, I seem to recall that the loops for this song (and a few others) were included with some piece of software I got, and so by means of experiment I thought I'd do a remix of it.

As it turned out, I was really pleased with the result. The mastering might be a little off - I wasn't so good at it back then, and if there is an original .wav file for this, I can't find it - but I think it comes across alright. (Also no idea on the BPM, I'm afraid.)

I always thought the original was quite catchy, and a few of the people who've heard it prior to now think this version's better, so I guess it worked out well.

From my forthcoming 'Seen and Unseen Powers' release, I'm particularly pleased with this track. It's a soundtrack-esque orchestral piece -- with a little inspiration taken from the movie Lost In Translation -- that consists of two 'movements'; initially composed of heavy and sombre drums, which make way for softer strings and pianos.

For the fifth week of Disquiet's Junto project. This called for a field recording, but lacking the equipment to make such a recording in satisfactory quality, I hunted through archive.org and found some CC-licensed pieces by Ollie Hall (link below).

As the recordings were taken in Japan, I decided to try and capture a sense of mono no aware (物の哀れ), a Japanese term which is rather difficult to translate, but connotes a kind of gentle sadness at the passing away of impermanent things. This seemed eminently suited to the nature of a field recording.

I deliberately avoided the use of any kind of beats or percussion in this piece, feeling that they were inappropriate, and chiefly used pads and strings, though I included samples of a few traditional Eastern instruments for flavour. Having greatly enjoyed producing this, I'm considering using some of the other field recordings that caught my ear on archive.org to assemble a small set along a similar theme.

A cover version of the song "Rocket Jump Waltz" from the Team Fortress 2 soundtrack, based on an anonymous MIDI version found online. All the instruments used here are from Sonivox, largely by coincidence, and I changed all but the piano into different, but complementary, instruments to what they were in the original composition (e.g. trombone to trumpet, clarinet to oboe, etc.)

All in all I'm very happy with this rendition and think it combines the character of the original with its own flavour.

Team Fortress 2 Main Theme (BLU version)

It's quite often been commented (and not entirely inaccurately) that modern dubstep sounds like a dial-up modem, so I took that idea and ran with it, producing something fairly dubstep-flavoured using old modem sounds.

My partner in crime here was http://soundcloud.com/margaras , whose help was invaluable in manipulating samples pulled from FreeSound. It's one of those things that was a very silly idea in the first place, and yet somehow seems to have turned out quite well.

Contains elements of samples originally posted on Freesound by Jlew, Bloodshedder, schluppipuppie, BoilingSand, pocket, and jobro, used variously under Attribution or Sampling+ Creative Commons licenses.

Automatic Negotiation

I'd missed the last two weeks' Junto assignments; a fortnight ago I was stumped for an idea, and last week I ran out of time due to having to deal with more pressing concerns. I didn't want to skip three weeks in a row, but I suspect this was not the best project on which to return.

The more-trouble-than-it-was-worth process for this week's entry primarily involved downloading a whole bunch of programs to try and record from the stunted Flash version of Nodebeat, as I don't have a smartphone or access to one. Once I'd finally managed to do so, I did a little light processing on the .wav (as there was some harshness in the recording) and used another downloaded program to convert it into a MIDI file. This done, I spent another couple of hours trying to figure out why my DAW wasn't working, and eventually found an update that fixed it, in the meantime hunting for some public-domain or creative-commons licensed MIDI files I could use as an accompaniment, many of which turned out to be duff, but I eventually managed to settle on a piece by Satie.

Assorted messing about with instruments and effects later, and we have this, which is a soporifically ambient version of Gymnopedie No.1, backed up with the quasi-random beeps and boops produced by Nodebeat. I suppose I was loosely inspired by Spiritualized, especially in the sleepy, medicated feel I tried to convey using DSP effects, and I was going to riff on their recent album title by calling the track "Lullabies in A&E".

Produced by feeding MIDI data into Reason Essentials, and adding a bunch of effects. Let's hope next week's assignment involves less banging my head against the proverbial wall.

So, a friend of mine told me about wubmachine.com, and said he'd been dying to feed it some Aphex Twin or similar. I figured, why not go a step further, and once I was done working on Actual Proper Music, I fed it some Venetian Snares.

I'm not sure if this is amazing or terrible or both at once, but I'm fairly sure it violates some kind of international treaty.

An experimental track that was intended to be in one style and rapidly became something very different (and much noisier). I'm not expert enough in the five bazillion subgenres of metal to pinpoint its exact style, nor am I frankly very interested in doing so.

This was originally going to be a dark-ambient piece for last week's Disquiet Junto, but... well, it really didn't turn out that way. I'm really happy with the result, though; it's been a long time since I've made anything like this (I guess the last was the 'Patient Asleep' release from 2009). Without going into details (and running the risk of sounding like a crazy person), this piece has also been very helpful in expressing a lot of the things that have been occupying my thoughts lately. Hopefully some other folks will like it too.

I was talking to a friend about game music, and some of our favourites were from Unreal Tournament '99. The music for that game was originally in MOD format, but I had a look around to see if I could find MIDI versions of any of the tracks.

I ended up finding a couple, and wanted to rework them to an extent. This one, the soundtrack to the excellent map CTF-Face, has turned out the best so far. I imported the MIDI file into Reason 6, and spent some time carefully fitting appropriate instruments to each channel to preserve the style of the original while giving it a fresh sound. After some deliberation I decided not to make modifications to the original compositon, so this is somewhere between a remix and a reinstrumentation.
