John Morgan and Kevin Shiu have long been good friends, amazing DJs, and producers to boot. I have many fond memories of hanging with them both on Vancouver Island and in the legendary Lotus nightclub in Vancouver's downtown area. When they offered me the opportunity to participate in a release on Powerplant Music, I jumped at the honour. 

The original track is a pretty dark progressive tribal house piece that would not at all sound out of place in a Sasha or John Digweed set. My remix takes the deep, creepy melodic bits and sticks them in a progressive house + breaks adrenaline rush. One of my favourite remixes to work on - so many great parts to work with.

John Morgan & Kevin Shiu - 8 Feet Under (AFK's Overkill remix) [Power Plant Music]

Ambient choon with sounds sampled live from a very small bird that my friend had (has?) as a pet. I pitched the bird samples down and it ended up sounding like a human, but speaking a language that does not exist. Most of my time was spent in sound design and creating meandering melodies and creepy parts to back it up. Thanks to Charles for pointing out a neat mac audio program that I made the a-rhythmic ship-creaking sounds with.

Vince Vaccaro's insanely enjoyable "South Pacific Ocean" remixed to suit the dancefloor. Performed live at the Victoria Electronic Music Festival with Vince on guitar, this remix also features his superb vocal work and is done with a proper breakbeat section in the middle and new melodies to boot.

Vince Vaccaro - Stay With Me (AFK's Forbidden Plateau Remix)

I wrote this track for my Saturday night residency at Hush, which was named "Lush." At Hush, I had performed with some absolutely stellar electronic musicians like Luke Chable, Shiloh, Hybrid, Adam Freeland, etc. This track was a tribute to the Hush experience, and incidentally ended up getting signed to Proton Music, and remixed by these progressive monsters that the world ended up knowing as Matt Rowan and Jaytech. This track broke well into the Balance charts, deep into the top 50 and peaked at #6.

Brian Golub (Seed) from Ritual Sounds invited me to remix the superb Desert Dwellers - a tribal track called "Musiki Ukabili." The original was rich with tribal percussion, strange jungle sounds, and a full moon vibe. I elected to go breakbeat on the remix and turned this in, which ended up being played by the likes of Hybrid and more.

The release for Obakeh - Ghosted came with a Habersham remix and one other breakbeat remix from me. But I did two.. and this is the other one - it's ambient and a little on the intense side at parts.

AFK, aka Davin Greenwell, has been a participator, contributor, and motivator in Victoria's electronic music scene since the late 90s. His "DJ ariz0na" moniker started popping up on rave flyers and club posters as far back as 1997. Since then, he has hosted various influential electronica radio shows on both commercial and community stations, co-founded the Pacific Front Recordings label, and performed at and promoted countless parties, club nights, and other events as AFK. His penchant for timeless progressive dance music has made him an important mainstay in the West Coast musical landscape. As sonic trends in the electronic music scene come and go, there’s always a place for AFK’s sound.
