This is the opening piece on the program from the Music Gallery's X-Avant-X Festival, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the CCMC Music Gallery. Michael Snow and I played in the original CCMC for many years, touring and recording. In the past 20 years, we've only played together a couple of times, so this was a wonderful re-encounter with my old duo buddy. Toronto. October 15, 2015.

I was only intending to play for a couple of minutes because I had taken a spill the previous morning and had a swollen hand. But then things just got going and I forgot about being compromised. 

It turned out to be an improvisation particularly occupied with constant change, sometimes sudden and otherwise 'morphing' from one orientation to another.

I got together with a friend, Afraaz Mulji, who I knew from Montreal who has come back to his home town of Toronto. We both studied at McGill University for a short time, him in composition, and I in history (before transferring full time to music). We had never played before, but I invited him over for a (distanced) jam in my living room. First time we'd seen each other in 3 years, and first time we'd ever played together. He had his roland synth on top of the grand piano we have at my place, and I had my electric guitar and all pedals to facilitate the most sonic choices. Between his hybrid keyboard setup and my electric rig, we just started to play and ended up having a free jam for about 90 minutes. We have captured that recording to save the event with a single stereo microphone at the highest possible recording quality.

Our Influences
Afraaz is a Tanzanian classical concert pianist in training, with many other instruments in his arsenal. Since his classical debut, he's dived into many other areas of music, including electronic experimental music, fusing many influences from Classical to Oriental and Indian modal influences, to jazz, and beyond. He's now at home playing behind various keyboards and synths. His influences include musicians such as the likes of Brian Eno, Samson Young, La Monte Young, and Art Tatum, to name a few. 

Oliver is a Toronto born and Toronto- based musician with a largely jazz guitar background. Over the past 2 years, he's said that he's been influenced by musicians of the more avantgarde elk(Ben Monder, late Coltrane, Messiaen, Schoenberg, Webern, Ornette Coleman, Starebaby, George Garzone, Dave Liebman).
