Episode 151: 70s Nigerian Rock to South African Jazz

Music from the Congo, with emphasis on rumba, which was inspired by music from Cuba (but not Cuban rumba per se) which was of course rooted in African rhythms, and so it was a music that came back home and was tweaked by some of the greatest musicians the world has known (e.g., Dr Nico, Franco, Tabu Ley, Grand Kalle, etc.). Episodes 152: Congolese Rumba 1960-1980s

Another deep dive on African Airwaves: the origin and forces that shaped early Congolese music and fashion, with a focus on the emergence of rumba in the capitals of Leopoldville (Kinshasa) and Brazzaville before the emergence of the electric guitar and OK Jazz. 

This is more of a podcast than a radio music hour. I tried to distill a lot of my learnings from real scholars and experts of this era, including Gary Stewart, Kazadi Mukuna, Bob White, Yoshiki Fukasawa, Alastair Johnston (www.muzikifan.com), Ken Braun, and others. Really, it was motivated by reading of Gary Stewart's Rumba on the River and wanting the soundtrack, only  to find more amazing resources by way of liner notes accompanying the releases shown in the tracklist below, from record labels SWP, PAM, El Sur, Stern's, Mississippi Records, and Crammed Discs, along with original research published by the aforementioned Kazadi Mukuna and Bob White. 

Also: https://therumbakings.com/ is one of the best documentaries on African music I've seen. 

errata-ish notes: After I recorded the show, I realized I missed a big connection. Jhimmy the Hawaiian, the first superstar in Congolese popular music, plays guitar on the classic "Kale-Kato" which I played right after the only Jhimmy track I could find. The guitar playing on that track is much more exciting than what you could hear prior to 1952 (the year Yoshiki Fukasawa considers 'real rumba' to have been realized). I also said at some point that Joseph Kabasele made rumba "world famous" and that was a bit of a stretch, but he did tour Europe in his heyday (early and mid 1960s).

African Airwaves is back after a long hiatus! For this episode we look forward to African and African-influenced artists who will be performing at this year's Earshot Jazz Festival which begins October 6 and ends on November 5th, 2023. Listening to Chief Adjuah's new album and his n'goni inspired me to do some research on the history of slavery in New Orleans which came in waves and shaped the sound distinct from that of Cuba. Africa within Earshot Jazz Festival 2023

I went on trip through East Africa in late 2023, and these are some of the musical highlights. On top of the list was seeing Mlimani Park Orchestra perform in Dar Es Salaam and hanging out with them on two occasions. They have been active for 45 years, and tumba player Ally Jamwaka (in photo) has been there almost from the start. I also attended the Nyege Nyege Festival at the literal source of the Nile River which exposed me to many sounds, both ancient and new. Taarab music from Zanzibar, Zilipendwa music from Uganda, a DJ set in Kampala with Dennis from Want Some Records, and more made for an amazing and much needed adventure after 7 years of intense employment at a startup that didn't quite make it.

Episode 159: Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, Congo, Kenya

This week’s show focuses on FESTAC ’77, a Pan-African culture and arts festival that brought together over 15,000 people from Africa and the African diaspora. Adjusting for inflation, $1.7B was spent on the festival by the suddenly oil-rich Nigeria to host such a monumental event. The primary aim was to decolonize perceptions of black culture and to discuss ways to nurture African pride and unity going forward, and not everyone agreed how to go about this (Lepold Senghor versus Sekou Toure versus Fela Kuti). For part one, I alternative between presenting some of the intellectual controversy leading up and during the festival and playing records that praised FESTAC ’77 or had the National Theatre (which was built for the festival) featured on the cover of the LP.

FESTAC '77 [Part 1: The National Theatre]

The Seattle Art Museum has in their collection an ivory mask of Queen Idia looted from the Kingdom of Benin in 1987. A similar mask, held captive in the British Museum, was used as the logo for FESTAC '77, a Pan-African extravaganza that happened in 1977. For this episode we listen to music relevant to the festival and discuss restitution.
