Renowned composer Philip Miller has worked with some of the most innovative filmmakers and artists to emerge from South Africa. He has composed soundtracks for many local and international film and television productions as well as working with internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge. His creative talents as a composer for film, has been recognised with several awards at the SAFTAs (South African Film and Television Awards). His most recent award was on February 20th 2010 where he was honoured with a SAFTA for Best Music Composer for the feature film White Lion.

Essential South African Jazz: The Jo’burg Sessions is an eclectic collection of African jazz standards, lovingly restored by some of the present masters in the genre. It features some of the most definitive and influential African jazz songs ever to have been composed – plus some newer and lesser-known gems.

All of these songs have been carefully selected, reinterpreted and re-recorded especially for this compilation.  A band was assembled comprising of some of South Africa’s most eminent jazz musicians such as pianist Paul Hanmer and acoustic guitarist Greg Georgiades. Producer Andre Abrahamse, one of South Africa’s finest composers, producers, arrangers and bass guitarists was brought in. Abrahamse brought to the project his wealth of experience gained as a live performer and session musician in Europe and the UK and his expertise as a producer of much South African jazz. He has worked with a number of world-renowned African musicians, including the likes of Fela Kuti.

A busy port on the Southern tip of Africa, Cape Town’s musical heritage has been influenced by a host of diverse cultures from all five continents. These far-flung musical traditions have inspired and cross-pollinated with local traditions and talents to become the fascinating mixed masala broadly defined as Cape Jazz.
Many of the songs in this collection demonstrate moppies (comic songs), which emanated from the ghoemalidjies (picnic songs) which encouraged people to dance in the streets. This musical style has given Cape Town its most recognised musical symbol.
