Tanzanian Afro-rock group Sunburst spent the mid-seventies in Zambia where they toured, recorded an album and ventured on performance trips to Mozambique and Swaziland. This demo tape was recorded during their stay in Zambia. It features Eric Allandale Dubuisson from UK group the Foundations, who joined Sunburst while on tour with Kenyan funk group Matata.

Jumanne presents a 2-hour mix for Penossi Radio, recorded live at Platypus Records (Amsterdam), 26 March 2024. 
A rare peek into boogie, modern soul, dancehall and reggae from 1980s and '90s Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten (the former Netherlands Antilles). While a few of these songs enjoyed local chart success back in the days, the majority of the singles and LP tracks disappeared into oblivion, until now. Some of the singles were self-released in small amounts, and they remain ungoogleable and little known.

Arubian Nights - 80's sounds from Aruba, Curaçao and Sint Maarten | Jumanne @ Platypus Record Shop

During a hot summer week in 2012 Kalaf Angelo, Gery Mendes, Bamba Nazar, Okmalumkoolkat and Nastio Mosquito came together to connect, compose and record at the Red Bull Studios in Amsterdam. The musicians, producers, visual artist and poet have a background in four different continents but rediscovered their joint heritage and passions rooted in the Motherland. During these sessions and conversations Boom Africa's first thematic EP was born: Boom Africa - The Love Affair.

Boom Africa was initiated by Metro54 and Africanhiphop.com to create a physical platform for music from all corners of Africa and the diaspora, and to promote dialogue and experimentation.

Boom Africa's first release is an ode to the love affair, reminiscent of what photographer Malick Sidibe captured in the imageries of the dancing lovers in the night clubs of 1960s Bamako. Festively, intimately courting your ears to travel with the music to Mogadishu, Luanda, Joburg or Kinsasha, cities that are being revived with injections of a generation of new dreamers and lovers. Boom Africa is a soft coup d'état on the domination of hyper-sexual dance music.

Africanhiphop.com's mixtape series focusing on forgotten and undiscovered 80s grooves is three volumes deep. Afro Cosmic Club brings uptempo songs from early to mid 1980s urban Africa and the Afro-European diaspora, with a few Caribbean rarities thrown in.

After a volume 2 which was played nearly 25,000 times since Fader Magazine published it, dj Gioumanne’s Afro Cosmic Club vol. 3 was originally hosted by Okayafrica in their Africa In Your Earbuds series (August 2014). Since Okayafrica recently cancelled their Soundcloud account, we have republished the mix here.

Body Music with Gioumanne - live on Red Light Radio (Africa Is Hot)

The first mixtape we featured in our Fifteen Years Africanhiphop.com series (2012) is in fact one of the first full-length mixes we uploaded to the web back in 1999 under the flag of ‘Rumba-Kali African Hip Hop show’, the predecessor to African Hip Hop Radio. This collection of Senegalese hip hop from cassette tapes was collected in Dakar and pasted together ‘ugly edit’ style using a minidisc deck.

In this Africa Is Hot special (live on Red Light Radio, 30 Sept 2019) we focus on the best entries to the 1980 Moulin D'Or music competition by Radio Nederland (RNW), which received submissions by hundreds of young groups from all over French speaking Africa. The 100 best tracks were featured on a promotional 7 lp-box (less than 100 copies made which were sent to partner radio stations), from which Jumanne selected 15 psych funk, jazz, sahel blues and other cross-over grooves. The bands in this mix include winners Amabano (Burundi), and from Niger: Orch Caravane, Orch Vibrations, Orch Supersony and Orch les As; from Cameroon: OIC Makoume Jazz, Orch de la Police and Orch Afro-Banouga. Plus Orch Les Redoutables (Zaire / DR Congo) and Saroubou Djantbi (Senegal).

Unreleased live rap tape edit from 1980 finally available

Disco editor Kenny Wilson takes you back to a time when rapping on the mic was restricted to saying rudimentary rhymes, dropping service announcements and playing with the echo chamber: the Bronx, New York in the years leading up to the first commercial rap release. Taking unique live recordings from his brother's tape collection, Kenny - a professional sound technician working at the tiny Uptown Heat studio - used all his spare time from the autumn of 1978 through the winter of 1980 to create a master piece of tape editing, the Live Convention 77-79 compilation. 
 
The hour-plus of edited disco breaks seamlessly spliced together with live rap recordings brings life into dubs taken from distorted, hissy and muffled third-generation tape copies, recorded at hip hop events featuring the likes of deejays Kool Herc, Jazzy Jay, Grandwizard Theodore, emcees Busy Bee, Kool Kyle, Smiley, Melle Mel: recordings from as early as 1977 that were never commercially released and that, thirty years down the line, are rarer than hen's teeth. 
The genius of Kenny Wilson lies not so much in the breakbeat edits, which on this tape are quite straightforward, but in the extremely careful splicing of vocals and instrumental funk and disco breaks, as well as his selection of music and vocal snippets from tv documentaries and movies, a technique that would resurface almost a decade later when hip hop producers started using samples!

The name Live Convention 77-79 invokes two classics hip hop records, the Live convention 81 and 82 live rap albums (by now very expensive and rare collectors items). While these were actually inspired by Kenny's work, their predecessor Live Convention 77-79 sadly never saw the light of day as the master recordings had gone missing during a robbery. 
That is, until now! Golden Reaal brings you the entire mix as it was supposed to come out in 1981 on the Bronx-based Disco Wax label. The reissue is presented with its original sleeve art work in a luxury and strictly limited 7 inch package, accompanied by an exclusive in-depth interview with Kenny Wilson.
