Topic and Guest: Today the show focuses on the evolutions of the Black Freedom Movement with   revolutionary, speaker, writer, organizer, political theorist Ashanti Alston.  In the conversation with AfricaNow!’s Executive Producer and Co-Host James Pope, stresses the importance of study groups and other forms of intellectual development in building and transforming movements and individuals.  Frantz Fanon in The Wretched of The Earth notes that “Nobody has a monopoly on truth, neither the leader nor the militant.  The search for truth in local situations is the responsibility of the community. …The collective struggle presupposes a collective responsibility from the rank and file and collective responsibility at the top. …”  (The Wretched of The Earth, pp. 139-140)

Ashanti Omowali Alston is a revolutionary, speaker, writer, organizer, political theorist. Ashanti Alston is one of the few former members of the Black Panther Party (BPP) who identifies as an anarchist in the tradition of New Afrikan ancestor Kwesi Balagoon (BPP & Black Liberation Army) within the Black Liberation Movement. As a result of his membership in both the BPP and Black Liberation Army (BLA), he served a total of 14 years as a political prisoner and prisoner-of-war.  He is currently on the Steering Committee of the National Jericho Movement to free U.S. political prisoners.
