Batuk is a creative collective founded by South African electronic music producers Aero Manyelo and Spoek Mathambo; along with the prolific artist and vocalist Manteiga.

Call Me Naughty is from Batuk's debut album Musica da Terra, coming out on May 27th on Teka Records.

Batuk's debut album, Musica da Terra, is a brave and genre-defying record featuring the the collective seemlessly expressing a variety of influences from zouk, afro/tribal house, techno and traditional African music.

The album features collaborations with artists such as Nandi Ndlovu, Grupo Zore and Grupo Makarita (Mozambique); Giovanni Kiyingi, Annet Nandujja, Lebon and Nilotica (Uganda).

2016 will see Batuk performing their exciting live show worldwide.

Over the years Argentinian duo Klik & Frik have taken the bubbling Latin electronic scene to deeper levels and in the process garnered support from the likes of Vice, Billboard, Red Bull as well as sharing line ups with Squarepusher, The Orb, Nina Kraviz, Detroit Swindle and more. Their debut album was released in 2017 and featured friends Nicola Cruz, Chancha Via Circuito and Mohanad Zohair.
But it is impossible to talk about Klik & Frik without first delving into their origins as the explosive Frikstailers.
The Frikstailers, composed of duo Rafa Caivano and Lisandro Sona, exploded onto the scene in 2006 by turning the whole electro-cumbia genre on its head. Fusing cumbia with dancehall, hip hop and electronic beats they took tropical to extraterrestrial levels and tore up unsuspecting dancefloors across the world. Their unique style has seen them put out remixes on DFA Records, Young Turks/XL Recordings, Mad Decent (Hold The Line Cumbia style anyone?) and included on Modeselektor’s ‘Modeselektion Vol 2’. They have played sessions on KEXP, Boiler Room and NPR and their debut album caught the attention of XLR8R and more.
But during their journey as Frikstailers, Rafa and Lisandro found they were maturing in their ideas, sounds and productions. They needed a musical outlet that enabled them to showcase more subtle and textured sounds for the dancefloor that weren’t just upbeat bangers. They wanted to go deeper. In 2013 they were invited to play Mutek Mexico on the Red Bull Music Academy stage and so they began making new music. They explored indigenous sounds (which at the time had been largely ignored) and started to blend them with deeper electronic production. The resulting hypnotic, ritualistic and meditative blends were debuted at Mutek Mexico under their new moniker Klik & Frik.
With rich layers of electronic synthesizers and groove boxes the Refugio EP has a unique approach to the ancestral influences of South America. From the bass propelling opener Achalay (meaning How Beautiful) textured with glitches and synths, to the quenacho flute and hypnotic beat on Refugio (Refuge), to the piano on La Puna Satie inspired by French composer Erik Satie, and the euphoric Las Penas, the EP is a deep and meditative melding of influences. The traditional quenacho and pinkullo flutes feature across the tracks as a tribute to the indigenous music and mysticism of Argentina.
As Rafa put it, the Refugio EP is a reflection on the need for human connection, refuge and a noble reasons to keep going at a time when the world is burning both politically and literally.

Klik & Frik - Las Penas

Sapa Sincronia is an interspecies improvisation by the producer Gama, released under the moniker Numa Gama. The one take 24-minutes recording contains interactions between the producer and the frogs of the highland region of Rio de Janeiro. Feedback, sampling and synthesis techniques are used as tools of communication between animals. Sapa Sincronia is a provocation to the anthropocene and a proposal to syncronize with other life forms in everything we do, so we can integrate with their needs and what can be learned from them. It is a study on of how beings influence each other.

Sometime in 2018, when I was visiting my mother in Rio de Janeiro, I went on small family trip to Serrinha do Alambari. A beautiful place in the highlands, few hours from the city. In the place we stayed there was a small artificial lake, sitting there for so long that there was an ecosystem created inside. We arrived in the full moon and soon I noticed a strong movement with the frogs. I have never experienced such loud ribbets and croaks, not even in the Amazon. I took my speakers, recorder and computer and settled them up near the lake and started to record them and play some simple waves. Instantly, I noticed they would react to the sound. Specific tones and frequencies made each species react differently. The low-singing frogs were really captivated to hear a B flat for example. Tuned in their own way, of course. I started experimenting at that moment with different techniques including feedback, sampling and synthesis. The result is a 24 minute recording called Sapa Sincronia. I call it a Sincronia as a provocation to our anthropocentric way of creation and as a proposal to communicate with other life forms in everything we do, so we can syncronize with what we can learn from them, and listen to their needs."

Biomigrant & La Payara - ¿Porqué? (ft. Carlos Florez)

Shika Shika is more than happy to present a new Botanas single by Brazilian talent Numa Gama from the Voodoohop Collective. In Numa Gama's words:

"Sounds can transport us in every single way. Right now, we cannot get together so I decided to collect these tracks to give everyone out there the chance to listen and dance. Together still, but in a more diluted spacetime.

This release contains two tracks I used to play a lot on the dance floor, an amazing spontaneous cross remix by Barda and Barrio Lindo, as well as an ambient mix which I couldn't resist to make at the eleventh hour. 
All the sounds were collected from the many recordings I made in Amatlan the Quetzalcoatl, México, in early 2018. Even the echos were extracted from how the sound of the fireworks bounced between the mountains - something you could hear often because of the religious celebrations between November and December. In an improvised home studio, I added percussion, ngoni and guitar layers. The synth sound design for the tracks turned out to have an airy, smooth touch which resembles somehow a West African sounding texture - but from another dimension. As if it was a memory swimming in ether.

I hope more memories will keep being added to the magnetic field that these tracks represent.
