A mix of musical gems in a culturally rich era for Brazil that gave rise to diverse musical styles that include Afro Samba, dreamy jazz Percussion to Bossa Funk. A look at the lesser-known artists such as Ely Camargo and Vox Populi to icons Gilberto Gil and Tom Zé who helped define the cultural movement Tropicália through their unorthodox approach to melody. A monumental career in pop music isn’t easy when the system is built against you. But South African songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist “Om” Alec Khaoli managed to do just that. As apartheid reached its violent peak, Khaoli pursued an escapist form of dance music that resonated across his complicated country, influencing countless legends and releasing recordings across the world.

Umoja — Take Me High

Odion Iruoje aka “Sound President” was one of Nigeria's top producers in the 1970s and early '80s and credited as being the man who signed Fela Kuti to EMI Nigeria and the guy who produced all of Fela’s revolutionary early material from 1970-73. “Ikebe”, an African highlife boogie-funk killer, came out on Iruoje’s only solo recording, “Down To Earth”. Released on Iruoje's own label, Odion Ltd, in 1983, “Down To Earth” was only ever distributed in small quantities. In 2016 Soundway reissued “Down To Earth”, limited to 1.000 copies.
 
Fusing West African funk and highlife guitar riffs with jazzy grooves and unique Nigerian vocals, “Ikebe” is a go-to body mover that warms up every dancefloor.

The Mushrooms Project are well known for their sleazy mid-tempo laid-back percussive style, a sound that immediately resonated with rising stars and newly signed label mates Earthboogie. 

Specifically it was ‘Dubby Bolas’ from the Italian duo’s 2016 album ‘Rivea Corymbosa’ album that really excited Earthboogie and equally, the Mushrooms were fans of the afro disco sound the Londoners displayed on their debut track ‘Route Ten To Interzone’.

The mutual appreciation led to this remix project and now, released exclusively for Record Store Day 2018, their complementary productions styles collide with great effect.

There was much to see and much to do beneath the covered streets, the tarpaulin which hung from atop the towering buildings cast a shadow down upon the densely packed close. This was Owino market and the price was right for whatever and whichever wonder you chose to buy upon that fine day. The air was close and the tiny alleyways packed with the hustle and bustle of people moving between market stalls - the heat was stale under the tightly packed coveralls and inside was all the trinkets and treats you might ever desire. 

Kawuku Sound is the collaborative project of two electronic producers Contours and Cervo who have worked alongside Ugandan percussion troupe Fonkodelis Arkestra. They have release a six track EP with a blend of influences.
