Soundway Records present ‘Africa Special’, a digital only collection that draws on some the best songs from their genre defining African compilations ('Ghana Special', 'Nigeria Special' & 'Kenya Special'). Compiled by label boss Miles Cleret, ‘Africa Special’ focuses on tracks that are particularly 'African' in sound as opposed the US influenced 'Afro' records that also feature on these compilations. From Ghanaian highlife to Nigerian blues, Kenyan benga and Congolese influenced sounds, ‘Africa Special’ is a condensed volume featuring musicians from all over Africa that were resident in Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya in the 1960s, 70s & 80s (the golden era of African music).

The earliest Soundway compilation to feature on this new compilation is the now seminal ‘Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970-6’. Described by NPR as "essential", 'Nigeria Special' was the start of a series that spawned the equally vital ‘Ghana Special: Modern Highlife, Afro Sounds & Ghanaian Blues 1968 – 1981’ and this year’s acclaimed ‘Kenya Special: Selected East African Recordings from the 1970s & ‘80s’.  

Soundway Records was conceived in 2002 by label owner Miles Cleret whilst returning from Ghana in 2001 with bags of dusty old 45s and LPs that had mostly not been heard outside the former Gold Coast since their original release. Soundway’s first release 'Ghana Soundz - Afro-beat, Funk & Fusion in 70's Ghana' was the start of a series of well recieved compilation albums that made available classic and obscure recordings that had previously never made it out of the countries they were originally recorded in.

Kano State in northwest Nigeria is a land of paradox. The ancient home of the Hausa people, it has ties back to the oldest civilizations in West Africa. Muslim since around the 12th century, the region remained largely self-administered during the era of British colonialism, and never significantly adopted Christianity or Western culture and values as in other parts of Nigeria. In 2000, Kano instituted Shariah law. But by that time, the city of Kano was also the center of a large and active film industry, dubbed Kannywood. And it would soon be home to a nascent coterie of hip-hop artists. There followed a series of high-profile conflicts and crises between these forces of religion, politics and art in the years since. But as the Afropop crew discovered in 2017, Kano has achieved a delicate balance that allows film and music to continue apace under the watchful eye of clerics and a censorship board. We visit studios producing local nanaye music, with its echoes of Hausa tradition and Indian film music. We also meet young Hausa hip-hop artists striving to develop careers under uniquely challenging circumstances.

Fully Awaken

The "Black Pacific" is a term coined by our guide, ethnomusicologist Heidi Carolyn Feldman. She describes the circumstance of African descendants displaced not only from their ancestral homes in Africa, but also from the Atlantic coast nations where their enslaved ancestors were originally brought.

This Hip Deep edition explores the sonically vibrant realm of Afro-Peruvian music, a young genre identification that has flourished since the 1950s and has now produced artists of international renown, such as singer Susana Baca, and the black folkloric company Peru Negro.

The music is sensuous and deeply beautiful, and represents a fascinating and little-understood history. We will hear from Juan Morillo, who represents Peru Negro, from Susana Baca, and from other artists and community scholars Feldman has worked with during her extensive research of this topic.

African Head Charge started life as a studio recording project in 1981 when the percussion talents of Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah combined with the studio wizardry of Adrian Sherwood. Bonjo had come to England from a Rasta camp in the hills of Clarendon, Jamaica. From as early as he can remember he studied and played percussion, learning not only Rasta/Nyabinghi drums but also African and Afro Cuban rhythms. He also loved to experiment, which made working with Sherwood perfect. Working with tape loops, manipulated and vari-speeded 1/4 inch tape that was re-recorded back to the multi-track tape, reverbs and delays, this was then applied to the performances of the musicians. And so the first psychedelic African dub LP ‘My Life In A Hole In The Ground’ was created.

It was not until the late 1980s that African Head Charge made its first appearance as a live band, taking place at the University of London (ULU) and instantly a sold out success. What followed in the next few years gave them semi-legendary status, with performances at festivals such as Glastonbury and Womad, and visits to Australia, New Zealand and Japan.

Three more largely experimental studio albums followed throughout the 80’s: ‘Environmental Studies’ (1982), ‘Drastic Season’ (1983) and ‘Off The Beaten Track’ (1986). The latter has been hailed as both a seminal recording in the progressive use of sound-bite technology and an excellent example of the integration of live instrumentation and programmed music.

1990 saw the release of the ‘Songs Of Praise’ LP widely acknowledged as their masterpiece. It featured religious chants from different parts of the world set to an African dub backdrop of multi-layered percussion and demonstrated another evolution in their sound. It was followed by the complimentary ‘In Pursuit Of Shashamane Land’ album in 1993.

In 1995 Bonjo left London to start a new life in Ghana and it was not until 2003 that he made a return visit to London and renewed his partnership with Adrian Sherwood on ‘Vision Of A Psychedelic Africa’, released in 2005. Voodoo of the Godsent is their most recent studio album, described by the label as being “the culmination of thirty years of endeavour”.

In 2016 On-U Sound put out vinyl reissues of the first four African Head Charge albums, which had become increasingly sought after by DJs and collectors. These were followed up with an LP of unreleased tracks and excursions from that same early-80s period, ‘Return Of The Crocodile’, carefully transferred from the original decaying tapes and sequenced for release by On-U archivist Patrick Dokter.

African Head Charge have returned to the live stage in recent years with a line-up featuring original African Head Charge members and augmented by the electronics of Gaudi (recently heard on Lee “Scratch” Perry’s ‘Rainford’ and ‘Heavy Rain’). The current show fuses together djembes, guitars, drums, keys and vocals with heavy electronic sampling and visuals. The collective use this blend of live and electronica to generate an intoxicating soundscape of reggae-inflected drumming, visceral vocals and bottomless, thrumming bass-lines that truly reach to the heart of your being.
