Ron Trent & Trinidadian Deep Beats Part 3

Of all contemporary Cape Verdeans, Cesaria Evora, "the Queen of the Morna" made the biggest impression internationally. However the first Cape Verdean to grace the American imagination was the harpooner Dagoo in Herman Melville's Moby Dick (1851). Cape Verdeans first arrived in United States as whalers in the late 1700's and have been coming ever since, bringing a distinctive Portuguese-African Kriolu flavor to communities across Southern New England and beyond. We'll take a step back in time and look at the rich cultural life of Cape Verdean neighborhoods, where great bands played mornas and coladeiras at local social clubs.  Our principle guide for this program will be historian Marilyn Halter, author of “Between Race and Ethnicity: Cape Verdean American Immigrants, 1860-1965.” She'll take us through the years as the Cape Verdean community navigated the turbulent waters of opportunity and identity in America long before the age of American multiculturalism. Then we'll jump ahead and explore current trends from the far-flung Diaspora's thriving music scene, ranging from hip-busting funaná to sleek cabo-zouk. All along, we'll be hearing from Cape Verdean-American musicians, from old-time guitar master Freddy Silva to rapper Mo Green, as they reflect on immigration, nostalgia, heritage, and what it means to be Cape Verdean in the United States.

Web Web with their sixth album in seven years and with a new touch. More psychedelic, sometimes more krauty than before. 
This time, WEB WEB in their original line-up (without Max Herre) have (again) chosen a special guest: JJ Whitefield (The Poets Of Rhythm / Karl Hector & The Malcouns / Syrup), who contributes the fantastic guitar sound.
His riffs are sometimes funky as with the Poets Of Rhythm or Syrup, or more psychedelic as with Karl Hector & The Malcouns or his many live and studio recordings with Embryo. The sound color of his guitar gives the album the thrust into the wonderful atmosphere of spacey jazz-kraut bands of the seventies.

The concept of the album should be the exact opposite of the previous WEB MAX album (WEB MAX II): Back to the (WEB WEB) roots, with spontaneous, improvised pieces, fragments, ideas that mean the greatest possible liberty and live spirit.
And the idea of bringing JJ Whitefield on board was just as unpredictable and improvised: one day before the session, Roberto Di Gioia thought to himself:
"JJ and I have always lived in Munich. But unfortunately, we've never really crossed paths. I'm a great admirer of his art, his music, his way of playing. He is so inspiring because he doesn't compromise. He plays in his own way, he's not a copy of anyone or anything."

So Roberto spontaneously called JJ and asked him if he could imagine playing on one or two songs. JJ immediately said yes, and a day later he was in the studio.
They actually only played two songs: One lasted 25 minutes, the other 45 minutes. And most of the tracks (apart from a few others without him) for the album "Plexus Plexus", which means something like: Network, interweaving.
The 14 compositions were created over two days, recorded by Jan Krause (Beanfield) in Munich. The energetic live session lasted twice 10 hours, and everyone - Roberto Di Gioia (Rhodes, Fender Precision Bass, Moog, Mellotron, percussion), Christian von Kaphengst (Fender Precision Bass, Rhodes), Peter Gall (drums, percussion, Fender Rhodes), Tony Lakatos (tenor saxophone, flute) - was “on fire” to the core. The musicians switched instruments to create a completely different overall sound: Kaphengst on Fender Rhodes sounds different to Roberto, his playing has a different harmonic structure, and Roberto on bass is familiar from numerous Max Herre recordings, or from Till Brönner's album “Till Brönner”, and of course also from the “Let Yourself Be Loved” by Joy Denalane, which he produced and which was released on Motown Records.

Michael Reinboth (Compost) was present at the session and spontaneously made a small request: "Hey, why don't you play Moondog's "Bird's Lament"? So they listened to the original once (!) and the guys played it through twice in their irresistibly professional way. 

The cover artwork is once again by Jan Steins and continues the series of fantastic illustrations for all Web Web albums.

Kano State in northwest Nigeria is a land of paradox. The ancient home of the Hausa people, it has ties back to the oldest civilizations in West Africa. Muslim since around the 12th century, the region remained largely self-administered during the era of British colonialism, and never significantly adopted Christianity or Western culture and values as in other parts of Nigeria. In 2000, Kano instituted Shariah law. But by that time, the city of Kano was also the center of a large and active film industry, dubbed Kannywood. And it would soon be home to a nascent coterie of hip-hop artists. There followed a series of high-profile conflicts and crises between these forces of religion, politics and art in the years since. But as the Afropop crew discovered in 2017, Kano has achieved a delicate balance that allows film and music to continue apace under the watchful eye of clerics and a censorship board. We visit studios producing local nanaye music, with its echoes of Hausa tradition and Indian film music. We also meet young Hausa hip-hop artists striving to develop careers under uniquely challenging circumstances.

Soca stars Alison Hinds and Edwin Yearwood talk about the pros and cons of the island's competition circuit, and we learn about the hot "soca bashment" scene. As far back as the 1960s, there was a thriving recording industry in Angola. The largest record company of colonial ruler Portugal, Valentim de Carvalho, set up a pressing plant in Luanda and officially pressed licensed repertoire from labels like CBS and EMI. 

Urban Angolan music from the 1970s was made for a populace in revolt. It is a heady, rhythmic sound that swings with the recognizable semba (which draws from the same rhythms as the Brazilian samba) as often as it does with the Angolan merengue. It can jump into uncharted frenetic realms that are a unique mixture of local rhythms like rebita and semba, imported rhythms like samba and merengue, and rumba from neighboring Congolese tribes. We have humbly tried to reproduce this rich musical effervescence in this mix. 1h 21min made strictly of Angolan original 7inches carefully digged by our man DJ Afrosider Look. We carefully chose some of the  best tunes from labels that existed before Angola's independence (Rebita and Ngola, circa 1972-1976) and its brutal civil war (CDA and Merengue, circa 1975-1977).
