For the latest episode of Kuboraum's Digital Sound Residency, Paris-based DJ and producer Bambounou links up with Malian rapper Sadandsolo for 'Sweet Sixteen', balancing melodic verses over stripped-back beats that sit between electronic experimentation and rap.

Born and raised in Paris, with Malian and Polish heritage, Bambounou (Jérémy Guindo de Montalembert) emerged in the early 2010s as one of the leading voices of a new French electronic scene, as part of the YounGunZ and ClekClekBoom collectives. He cut his teeth behind the decks at iconic venues like Social Club and Concrete, sculpting a fluid, unruly sonic language: grounded in the discipline of hypnotic house, fractured by IDM-like rhythmic disjunctions, and driven by a constant sense of tension. 

From his early releases on 50Weapons (Modeselektor’s imprint) to more conceptual compositions for AD93 (fka Whities, founded by Nic Tasker), he’s refined a style where groove continually slips just out of reach — creating friction without losing momentum. 

With BAMBE, his own imprint launched in 2021, he pushes this exploration to its core: stripped-back, percussive, and highly tactile club music. Whether solo (Cascade, The Life of a Touring DJ) or in close collaborations with Bruce (Final Conference) and Priori (C.R.U.S.H.), each release reflects a deep attention to detail and a desire to open rhythm up — to probe its fissures. 
His remixes follow the same instinct for divergence, bending tracks by Moby or Sampha to reveal unexpected textures and hidden reliefs. As a DJ, that same sensitivity to surprise and balance runs through his sets: a sinuous path through organic house, electronic experiments, and percussive ruptures — inviting both deep listening and physical surrender. 
With Levantarse, his latest solo project, Bambounou opens a new, prolific chapter, where pulse becomes a lens for exploring fine-grained textures and shifting forms. A music that moves forward without settling, attentive to both vertigo and nuance.

This same restless curiosity shapes his collaboration with Sadandsolo — an artist whose own journey crosses continents and cultures. Born Raoul Carrer, Sadandsolo was raised between Mali, Benin, Senegal, and South Africa before settling in Europe. He carries with him a mosaic of influences and memories, which inform a deeply personal, genre-fluid voice.

His latest single, 2006 till infinity, draws from that itinerant youth and paints a vivid portrait of a Gen Z kid discovering music through cracked software, LimeWire downloads, and YouTube rabbit holes. It’s the story of a digital native finding solace — and a sense of self — in music. 
A turning point: “YouTube changed my life / I watched the videos, I wanted to change clothes.”

Sadandsolo is part of a new wave of artists blending introspection with presence, memory with movement. Together, he and Bambounou craft a sound that bridges physical and emotional landscapes, while remaining sharply attuned to the moment.

In the 20th century, music and culture from the African Diaspora traveled all over the world.... and East Asia is no exception. In this Hip Deep episode, Afropop explores the different ways that Black music has influenced culture and society in places like China, Japan, Korea and Thailand. China scholar Andrew Jones takes us into the decadent underworld of 1930s Shanghai, where a hybrid form of jazz that mixed African-American sounds with traditional Chinese melodies challenged notions of tradition and modernity as political forces grappled to define the direction of modern China. Then we visit Japan, where homegrown reggae groups such as the Mighty Crown Soundsystem have fostered a massive Jamaican dancehall scene with an attention to detail. In many communities throughout Africa and the diaspora, music and spiritual life are deeply connected through the experience of trance: ritual possession by ancestors, spirits, deities, or simply the trance of communal dancing—usually accompanied by hypnotic melodies and rhythms. In this program, we explore the phenomenon of trance through a survey of musical and spiritual traditions. We'll discover how different cultural and spiritual ideas are expressed musically, how the mathematical complexity of mbira dzavuzimu music may lead to Shona spirit possession, and how experiments in neural imaging give us insight into how the brain works in a state of trance.
