This Hip Deep edition, based on field work in Ghana, tells the story of how highlife turned into Afro-funk. Guitarist/composer/bandleader Ebo Taylor, at 77, is our principle guide, taking us to his hometown Saltpond to explore the roots of his complex sound, and recounting his highlife years, and his deep study of American jazz in London in the early 60s—all part of a remarkable mix. We also hear from Ghanaian Afro-funk pioneer Gyedu Blay Ambolley and other observers and veterans of this history. Among the figures that interweave this story are James Brown, his most successful African successor Geraldo Pino, and, of course, the creator of Nigerian Afrobeat (a variety of Afro-funk), Fela Anikulapo Kuti. I am very happy to provide this new Red Stripe Disco mix. Very first volume was recorded & put online about 3 years ago. I never expected to collect enough records to provide 10 mixes but finally here it is. 

As usual, you will find in it, apart from a couple of more obvious songs, rare & obscure Jamaican related Funk / Disco / Modern Soul & Soulful Reggae. 
Thus, this new episode is a selection of under the radar or hard to get records involving Jamaican musicians & producers, from the late 70's / early 80's, that I am bringing to you with luv!

All of the songs here are selected from the original vinyl source, a majority of it having been released in Jamaica (the remaining was released in the UK). Please apologize the crackling on some of the songs, but I wasn't able to source better copies... The Jamaican way! :)

Devil's Pie is honored to present to you a tribute of jazz living legend Herbie Hancock by Mark de Clive-Lowe, one of today's contemporary musical masters. More than a regular DJ mix, this live recording features Mark looping, remixing, and adding his own musicianship to Herbie's iconic music.

In Mark de Clive-Lowe's own words:
"The first time I heard Herbie Hancock was the Miles live album My Funny Valentine/Four and More. It was the first time I'd heard that era jazz music and I remember being so blown away with the way Herbie and Tony Williams played together and interacted on that concert. That was the start of a deep admiration and love for the art, creativity and music of Herbie Hancock. I consumed everything I could that he turned his hand to - all of his work with Miles, his own solo records for Blue Note, sideman recordings with every jazz great in every decade since the 60s, his Mwandishi experimental crossover work, the Headhunters deep funk - there's nothing the man could not do. As a pianist he's the ultimate - harmonically so rich and inventive, melodically so lyrical, rhythmically so damn hip. I've been fortunate to see him play on numerous occasions all over the world. The first time was the VSOP band live in Japan along with Wayne Shorter, Wallace Roney, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. I was 17 at the time and can't really fully explain how amazing that was to me. He's one of my biggest inspirations and influences and through his huge body of work, a true musical mentor. In being asked to put together a tribute set, it was the perfect opportunity to go back through decades of his work and pick moments that I really love. I wanted to do more than just spin a set of tunes though, I wanted to take those moments and sample them, flip them, perform a live mixtape. It was the perfect way to share the man's music and how I feel about it. Enjoy!"

Here's volume two in the Clásico series, and I'm excited to share a live recording from myself on the turntables and Rudy Rexx on live percussion. 

The collaborative set between Rudy Rexx and myself was the inspiration for the first Clásico mix. However I made the previous volume without his musical contribution. At the moment we had barely begun to perform together as Clásico, so the mix served as an introduction to the music that we wanted to play. 

Fast forward to April 2013, and we've had a couple of months playing together and you get this live recording from our April set at Takoba in Austin. This evening I decided to play more Brazilian music along with the usual mix of Salsa, Cumbia, and other styles of Afro-Latin music.
